It’s that time of year where your home or business’ heating system will start kicking into gear. It’s also that time of year when sales commission “technician’s” get calls to “tune up” or “service” your equipment when you proactively pay for preventative maintenance or it has failed. Don’t call them in the first place unless you’re looking to upgrade your system anyways and money ain’t no thang. There are plenty of good companies in SE ID that will take good care of you, but be sure you’re hiring an actual technician and not a salesman that knows less about your furnace than they do about changing a cars oil.

The furnace below was purposely compromised by one company, disabled by a second company for being unsafe, but interestingly enough there was never any sign of carbon monoxide in the house(always have working carbon monoxide alarms in your house/business when you have gas appliance’s). Besides a capacitor and intake flue that were left disconnected, a dirty burner chamber and bad hot surface igniter, this baby is back to heating. How much longer will this unit last? Buddha knows—but I’m not going to hell for strong-arming anyone into buying a new system when it’s not necessary right now(Lord knows the commission guys wouldn’t be able to fix the hvac problems there anyways 🤣).

Hopefully your equipment doesn’t fail this winter 2026-2027. If it does and I can’t get to you, you’re in luck, because there are multiple companies that do the right thing and I’d be happy to point you in their direction. Have a great winter season and stay warm!

If you’re ever close to Shelley, you need to check out Rustic Rock Coffee. While helping them with some of their heat transfer needs, Heidi made a “Lotus” drink that was fruity, caffeinated, and didn’t make me crash later. If you haven’t been there yet—you need to go(they didn’t give me more $$$ for telling you to check it out 😆)!

✌️ Two kinds of gas leaks, but this is the more serious kind. Too many frijoles last night won’t involve your business’ insurance company. If you smell or suspect a gas leak, turn it off until the problem can be remedied.

Keep it simple, because multi-billion dollar companies can easily throw money at a problem and never really solve it, but you can get a lot further with your toolbox out here in the real world 🧰

“Take your coat off and stay a while”

If your air-cooled equipment keeps it’s jacket of debris on indoors it unfortunately can’t sweat to cool down and will run inefficiently, overheat, and eventually won’t be able to work for you anymore without a major repair. Grab a coil brush, foaming condenser spray, and a shop vac or give Rawls Mechanical a call to clean your coils for you!
