ORPC is excited to take part in Maine Blue Economy Week next week in Portland, bringing together the people and ideas shaping Maine’s ocean economy.

Walk down any of Portland’s wharves and piers, and you’ll find examples of how Maine’s heritage industries are working side by side with new innovators in the sector. As a part of that ecosystem, ORPC is proud to be kicking off the walking tour of Portland’s working waterfront Friday, October 2nd.

You can also stop by our booth Wednesday and Thursday to learn more about how ORPC’s river and tidal energy systems, built and tested in Maine, are providing clean power to communities across North America and beyond.

We look forward to seeing many of you there!

ORPC operations staff have recently returned from a successful trip to Igiugig, Alaska.

Alongside longstanding community partners, our team was able to successfully complete routine maintenance without bringing the devices to shore. That marks the completion of seven years' operating in the Kvichak River.

So much goes into ensuring this type of fieldwork runs smoothly. Engineers back in ORPC's Brunswick, Maine, lab honed each step of the process through dry runs ahead of the trip. ORPC’s field crew then used that learning to bring the devices to the surface, complete the maintenance and return the devices to the river bottom. And on this trip, our seasoned Alaska crew provided on water training to staff from Canada and Ireland to prepare them for upcoming deployments.

ORPC's strong record of successful deployments and retrievals is down to the employees and partners out there performing this work, season after season. The two RivGen devices are now back on the riverbed and have begun their eighth year of operation.

Marine energy.

Hydrokinetics.

Electricity from tides or rivers.

By whatever name you call it, water is power.

ORPC is on the road again in Alaska!

Last summer was one of our most intensive field seasons to date, with operations to assess several sites on the Yukon and Kuskokwim Rivers in partnership with Alaska Village Electric Cooperative.

This summer, Nathan Johnson, Doug Johnson, and incoming Alaska Director of Development Megan Brown, are covering more than 800 miles in two days to evaluate how ORPC solutions, powered by local free-running rivers, could provide clean, predictable electricity for customers ranging from private industries to remote communities to regional utilities.

With each trip, our understanding of Alaska's natural resources grows—and with it, the firm belief that these wild rivers have the power (literally) to solve the energy needs of the people who are sustained by them.

Next stop, Igiugig!

We're excited to welcome a new field services lead to the team!

Sebastian Plotkin comes to ORPC with a background in project management and operations roles across maritime industries, from sailing to wave-powered desalination. He'll be managing field operations for ORPC in Canada and abroad, helping to lead our crews in site assessments and power system deployments. Outside of work, you're likely to find Sebastian sailing, camping, or practicing calisthenics.

“'Fuel getting to Igiugig has been an everlasting issue since electricity was introduced,' said Jonathan Salmon, Igiugig Village Council energy director...The community had long recognized the Kvichak River as a possible source of consistent energy."

Thank you to TriplePundit for spotlighting Igiugig as the Alaskan village leading the way in harnessing energy from free-flowing rivers.

Kayaking and coastal science? Where can we sign up?

In between trips out on the water, participants of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI)'s SEEK summer camp popped into ORPC's Portland office last week for a lesson in hydrokinetic energy.

Our engineers and environmental staff demonstrated how the energy of moving water, like a river or tidal current, can become a source of reliable, clean power. We also shared a bit about our own job roles and the educational paths that led us to ORPC.

Thanks for letting us be a part of your week, campers!

Last week Conor Dillon joined researchers at the University of Galway as they tested key mooring components of ORPC Ireland's tidal energy system on the path to megawatt-scale.

The work is part of the SEAI-funded A-TEAM project (RDD917), bringing together expert research teams, testing infrastructure and technology to advance the development of tidal energy across Ireland and Europe. Thank you for having us, University of Galway!

“For future generations, the future of our community...we obviously cannot be dependent on diesel.” - Mayor of False Pass, Alaska, Nikki Hoblett

Last week, Doug Johnson made the five-hour flight from ORPC's Anchorage base to the community that sits at the start of the Aleutian Islands, adjacent to one of Alaska's most powerful tidal resources.

His visit was part of an ongoing partnership between the City of False Pass, Aleutian Pribilof Island Community Development Association - Apicda and ORPC to identify the potential for tidal power from the Isanotski Strait to reduce the community's reliance on diesel fuel. Located where the Bering Sea meets the Gulf of Alaska, False Pass serves as a strategic refueling station for commercial fishing vessels and is home to a major fish processing industry.

Thank you to Maggie Nelson at KUCB for highlighting the potential for rivers and tides to power remote communities across Alaska and beyond with a resource that never stops moving.
