Collaboration is one of the most powerful tools we have in solving complex water resource challenges!

At the recent California Water Efficiency Partnership plenary, water agencies, nonprofits, and industry partners came together to discuss direct-install turf removal programs and share real-world experiences from across California. The strong attendance and active participation reinforced just how much interest there is in developing scalable, effective approaches to landscape transformation.

Our team enjoyed facilitating discussions, hearing agencies exchange ideas, and demonstrating the landscape maintenance app that will help support long-term landscape success beyond installation. Thank you to everyone who contributed their time, questions, and expertise. These conversations are helping build the knowledge, partnerships, and tools needed to advance water-efficient landscapes statewide.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last week at Woodard & Curran for a thoughtful and energizing Sustainability Council meeting. Author, Consultant, and TEDx Speaker Lisa Whited guided us through an exploration of circular economy not just as a framework, but as a mindset shift—rethinking workplace value through a circular lens. Together, we workshopped ways to apply circular thinking in our own organizations, and then saw it come to life during a guided tour of W&C’s beautifully redesigned, sustainability-forward office.

Our Environmental Science students recently welcomed Brad Hayes, Senior Advisor at Woodard & Curran, back to UCT to share his experience in the wastewater industry. Brad spoke with students about the field, career trajectory, and about the skills and mindset that can help them succeed.

UCT senior Mary first heard Brad speak in the spring of her sophomore year, and that experience helped inspire her to apply for a wastewater internship in Wareham. The internship gave her valuable hands-on experience in the field and helped her continue building her knowledge and confidence. Before Brad spoke this time, Mary shared a few of the lessons she’s learned along the way and offered tips to younger students who may be considering a similar path.

Relationships with industry professionals like Brad are an important part of career and technical education. They help students understand how classroom learning connects to real work, introduce them to career paths they may not have considered, and give them the opportunity to learn directly from people working in the field.

Brad's visits at UCT have had a lasting impact on students over the years. Thank you, Brad, for continuing to share your time and experience with our students!
