Fourth of July 2026 Preparation & Safety Tips for Maine
Plan ahead, stay hydrated, and follow local laws to make your Independence Day in Maine safe and enjoyable.

Travel Safety
Arrive early: Maine’s Bureau of Highway Safety expects increased traffic and impaired driving. Get on the road before noon to avoid the 2–7 p.m.

Designate a sober driver: Always plan for a safe ride home. Use rideshares, public transit, or arrange for a sober driver.

Watch for impaired drivers: Law enforcement will be patrolling more heavily. If you see erratic driving, call 9-1-1
Stay hydrated and cool: Heat can be intense; drink water, wear sunblock, and seek shade.

Fireworks Safety
Check local laws: Maine towns/cities may have stricter rules than state law; confirm before buying or using fireworks.

Use professionally operated shows when possible, as consumer fireworks are often illegal in Maine American Red Cross+1.

If you must use fireworks:

Light only one at a time, from a dry, open area with no nearby vegetation

Keep water nearby and wear eye protection

Never relight a dud; store fireworks cool, dry, and away from children/pets

Keep pets indoors to avoid burns or noise stress
Outdoor Event & Cookout Safety
Test smoke and CO detectors before guests arrive

Secure outdoor areas: Put away tools, secure furniture, and light walkways if hosting into the evening

Grill safety: Keep at least 10 feet from structures, never grill indoors, and keep children/pets away

Pool safety: Never leave children unattended near water; have a “Water Watcher” and rescue equipment ready

Heat & Health
Slow down outdoor activities; take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas

Check on vulnerable neighbors who may lack cooling access

Avoid sugary, caffeinated, and alcoholic drinks; stay hydrated with plain water
