Cold weather is on the way. If your RV, boat, or off-grid system is going into storage for the season, taking a few steps to properly winterize your LiFePO₄ batteries can help keep them ready for when you need them again.

1. Bring the batteries to a full charge using shore power, generator, or lithium charger.
2. Disconnect Solar PV inputs from controllers.
3. Disconnect from shore power, generator, or lithium charger.
4. Disconnect the batteries from the system using your disconnect switch or removing the positive main battery cable.
5. Ensure that all system loads, including Smoke and CO detectors, must also be powered down.
6. Turn off or disconnect the heat-enable wire from the positive main terminal for heated Battle Born Batteries.
7. If temperatures are expected to drop below -10 ° F where the batteries are being stored, remove them and store them in a warmer location.

A little preparation before winter can help protect your battery bank and make getting back on the road or water easier when the season changes.

How do a truck's hotel load batteries perform when temperatures drop?

Cold weather can significantly impact battery performance, especially for heavy-duty trucking fleets relying on auxiliary power for HVAC systems, refrigeration, and onboard electronics during rest periods.

Traditional lead-acid batteries experience increased internal resistance as temperatures fall, reducing usable capacity and slowing recharge times. For drivers, that can mean less available power, increased engine idling, and potential downtime.

But how does lithium compare?

In a study conducted by Dragonfly Energy , battery banks were tested at different temperatures and discharge rates. The results highlighted significant differences in available capacity:

🌡️ 26–30°F: LiFePO₄ batteries delivered an average of 89% of rated capacity, compared to just 11% for AGM lead-acid.

🌡️ 13–18°F: LiFePO₄ batteries maintained an average of 82% of rated capacity, while AGM lead-acid delivered only 8%.

These results demonstrate how battery chemistry can impact the amount of usable energy available to power essential hotel loads in freezing conditions.

For trucking fleets, maintaining reliable auxiliary power can help reduce unnecessary idling, support driver comfort, and minimize operational disruptions throughout the winter months.

Camping season may be winding down, but before you put your RV away for the winter, make sure your lithium batteries are properly prepared for storage.

One of the advantages of LiFePO₄ batteries is their low self-discharge rate, allowing them to sit unused for extended periods with minimal maintenance. However, a few simple steps can help protect long-term performance.

🔋 Fully charge before storage: Start with a full battery to help maintain adequate charge throughout the off-season.

🔌 Disconnect all loads and charging sources: Even small parasitic draws from inverters, monitors, and other electronics can slowly drain your batteries.

🌡️ Consider storage temperatures: Moderate temperatures between 32°F and 95°F are ideal. Avoid charging in freezing conditions unless your battery is equipped and rated for it.

✅ Check periodically: Every few months, verify battery voltage and confirm that no loads have been left connected.

Proper off-season storage helps ensure your lithium power system is ready when camping season returns.

We’re proud to support Stryten Energy ’s teams, Coordinate Hunters and Finding North, as they take on more than 2,500 kilometers of demanding desert terrain using only maps, a compass, and a roadbook during the 2026 Rebelle Rally .

Along for the journey, each team’s Jeep is outfitted with a 75Ah 12V Group 24 Battle Born® Battery. The batteries will provide reliable auxiliary power throughout the Rally, including keeping the teams’ mini-fridges running through the desert heat.

Portable solar can be one of the simplest ways to add charging capability to your RV, especially if it already has a factory-installed solar port.

With a compatible setup, a portable solar panel can connect through your RV’s solar port to help keep your house batteries charged while you’re camping. The basic setup includes:

• Portable solar panel
• Compatible adapter cable
• RV solar port
• Solar charge controller
• House battery bank

The key is making sure each component works together. Before plugging in, verify your RV’s solar port type, polarity, and current rating, and make sure a properly sized solar charge controller is installed between the panel and batteries.
