BEAR Construction Company

BEAR Construction Company General Construction & Construction Management

In 1984, three hard working brothers–with a home office and the goal of owning their own business–founded Bear Construction Company. While Nick, George and Jim Wienold founded the company as carpentry contractors, they soon realized that their hard work, technical knowledge and attention to detail frequently outpaced that of the general contractors they hired. They soon expanded the scope of their

company–adding a general contracting operation–to meet the needs of their customers. The firm concentrated its early efforts on tenant and retail work, and its client base grew steadily because of Bear's reputation for outstanding workmanship, customer service and value. To accommodate the influx of work, Bear purchased an office and a warehouse located on five acres in Arlington Heights. Steady Growth/New HQ
The company experienced steady growth and, by the early 1990's, expanded its expertise to include the special requirements of hospital and communication facility construction. Additional personnel were added and, in 2001, Bear Construction moved into its current 36,000-square-foot headquarters in Rolling Meadows. Today, Bear Construction Company employs a complete array of professionals who focus on every aspect of construction, from cost estimation and project management to accounting and safety and risk management. Additionally, the firm employs a large team of union carpenters, laborers and decorators experienced in a wide array of projects. While the company has grown significantly since its early days, the Wienold brothers have made it a priority to maintain the same family atmosphere they began with in 1984. This culture allows each employee to share in a sense of pride and ownership for everything the company accomplishes and is among the many reasons that Bear Construction Company stands out from its competitors.

Designed to elevate the user experience along the Chicago riverfront, River Park at THE MART turned a highly visible urban edge into a more comfortable, accessible destination for gathering, dining, and events. The improvements focused on creating a space that felt more usable in all conditions, with enhanced seating, shade, landscape features, and upgraded infrastructure that supports long-term performance and activity. Phase 2 built on that foundation by restoring key structural areas and expanding the overall public space experience.

For BEAR Construction, giving back isn’t a side initiative, it’s part of the foundation.

BEAR Cares was built around one belief: when people come together with a shared purpose, real change happens. Whether it’s fundraising, volunteering, organizing donation drives, supporting local nonprofits, or rolling up our sleeves on projects like this recent Habitat for Humanity build, our team is committed to using its collective talents to make a difference where it matters most.

The work may look different every time, but the “why” stays the same: strengthen communities, create opportunities and leave things better than we found them.

Education projects carry a long-term ripple effect.

Classrooms, labs, and student spaces aren’t just structures; they’re environments where focus is shaped, confidence is built, and futures start to take form. The work matters because what happens inside those walls matters even more.

That’s why education construction demands more than technical precision. It requires careful sequencing around active campuses, attention to safety, and an understanding that every day of disruption has a human impact on learning. The goal is simple: create spaces where students and educators can do their best work from day one.

"I would highly recommend BEAR Construction Company as a General Contractor for your upcoming construction project. BEAR successfully completed concurrent interior renovation projects (~86K SF) in two separate locations. Their early involvement assisted the remote project team with logistics planning, existing condition verification, and permitting. They provided an innovative technology solution to support a team working in three time zones. Even though the work was performed during unprecedented and challenging times, it was one of the smoothest renovation projects I have worked on."

If These Walls Could Talk | Union Lofts

Long before it overlooked the neighborhood as luxury loft residences, this building was built for something far more utilitarian. Movement. Storage. Work. Every beam, column, and floorplate served a purpose tied to industry, not everyday living.

Then came the challenge: how do you introduce modern residential life into a structure never designed for it without losing the character that made it worth saving in the first place?

The answer required transformation at every level. Literally.

To accommodate a new 20,000-square-foot penthouse floor, the existing structure underwent extensive reinforcement. Columns were strengthened. The building was shored and raised several inches from its original foundation to carry the added weight above. What once functioned solely as a freight elevator system was entirely reconstructed and extended, creating a new passenger experience for residents moving through the space each day.

But the goal was never to erase the building’s past. It was to let it remain visible.

The exposed cedar beam ceilings, wood flooring, and industrial proportions still speak to the structure’s original life. The finishes may feel modern, but the soul of the building remains rooted in Bridgeport’s history. Every detail balances what the building was with what it was becoming.

What these walls hold now is comfort, community, and a different kind of movement than they were first built for. But beneath it all, the original story still stands.

Built for what’s next without erasing what was.

If These Walls Could Talk | The Works

Before it became an amenity destination, this space was something entirely different - functional, hidden, overlooked. A mechanical penthouse in a century-old building doing its job quietly above it all, never meant to be the center of attention.

Then the question changed: not what could be added, but what could this become.

Working within an occupied 100-year-old structure came with constraints that shaped every decision. Vertical circulation had to be reimagined. Existing systems had to stay operational. Structural limits had to be respected while new loads were introduced above them. Nothing about it was simple, but that complexity became the framework for transformation.

Layer by layer, a new experience took form above the building’s original bones. A reworked arrival sequence now leads to a full amenity floor and fitness center. Above that, an outdoor terrace opens the building outward again complete with gathering spaces, fire features, and a design that nods to what came before rather than erasing it.

What was once purely utilitarian now holds something very different: energy, connection, and a new way of experiencing the building from the top down.

What these walls (and rooftops) carry now is not what they were built for. But they still remember exactly what they were.

Built for what’s next without erasing what was.
