Screaming Chickens - FIRST Robotics Team 3997
The 4H Screaming Chickens 42 team is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that facilitates student-led activities in mechanical and electrical engineering, computer programming and web design. We utilize our participation in the US FIRST community (www.firstinspires.org) to provide real-world, hands-on engineering experiences for teens in the San Antonio area. FIRST Robotics is all about fostering a love of STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Math) in young adults and children, and providing an environment for them to learn new skills and put them to practical use. Coined ‘the varsity sport of the mind,’ FIRST has a large focus on friendly competition. All teams are given the same challenge, then it is up to them to design, build, and code a robot that will then face off against other robots in huge tournaments.
We have been in existence for seven years and continue to grow as our country pushes for STEM fields. All our mentors are volunteers w/ no paid positions. 100% of funding goes to the program, providing material, electronic components, and registration fees for competitions in which we have done very well. We teach all year then test our skills by building 5 foot tall robots that are designed for a specific task and then we compete. We prepare students to become engineers and programmers as well as fostering skills and experience of immediate value to local businesses and military service. These students want to be here, making it a successful program and filling a need of the community – continuing where schools stop.
Not all schools in our area participate in FIRST, although their students wish to participate. In May 2011, our founding couch, Caroline Crosson, saw the potential of sharing FIRST’s vision with those students. She created this non-profit organization and began running the team from her home. Under her leadership, the Screaming Chickens participated in six FRC seasons (2012 – 2017), attending the World Championship in our rookie year and three times after that!
We strive to continue Caroline’s vision, building on the foundations and relationships she made, as well as extending our involvement with the San Antonio Community, forging new relationships with other local FRC teams and business leaders.
