Your ceiling is 8 feet. Your roof isn’t.
This is a ~100-year-old Palo Alto home our team remodeled over a decade ago. Yes, the décor is very 2014. Ignore the throw pillows and look at the ceilings.
We didn’t touch the roof or the rafters. We cut out the old ceiling joists, put in new beams to carry the load, and used the attic space that was already there:
→ Living room + kitchen: tray ceilings. The middle of a room has the most attic space, so that’s where it goes up.
→ Dining room: even more room up there, so we vaulted it. About 3 feet taller.
Heads up: in older homes those joists also keep the roof from pushing the walls apart. Don’t let anyone cut them without an engineer and a permit.
