The layer behind the tile. Before a single tile goes down, we set a 40 mil shower pan liner over a sloped pre-slope: corners folded never cut and run high of the walls.
Then cement board, a waterproof niche, and next comes the mortar bed.

We found a leak in our Ryan Homes bathroom only three years after it was built and took it as our sign to start fresh 🤍
