Kids bear the brunt of .

Research tracking hospital admissions found the surge in school-age children typically hits about 17-18 days after Labor Day, ahead of preschoolers and well ahead of adults.* The likely reason is a combination of rhinovirus infections that are spread in classrooms, along with allergy flare ups from increased pollen counts in the month of September.

For allergists managing pediatric patients with comorbid allergic disease, this predictability is a known window where proactive care can outpace a preventable spike.

September is known in the allergy and asthma community as .*

The timing isn't a coincidence: Ragw**d pollen hits its seasonal peak this month, right as the return to school increases exposure to respiratory viruses and indoor allergens in classrooms.* For patients with both allergic rhinitis and asthma, that combination means a noticeable uptick in symptom flares.

September also carries the highest rate of asthma-related ER visits and hospitalizations of any month.* The third week of September specifically is considered "Asthma Peak Week", coinciding with the height of ragw**d season.*

This is a good time to revisit testing panels and treatment plans with patients whose symptoms tend to worsen seasonally.

A patient comes into your clinic complaining of oral itching and swelling after eating a particular food, thinking that they may be allergic to it. However, this reaction might be a clue that they're allergic to something entirely different.

Oral Allergy Syndrome (or Pollen Food Allergy Syndrome) occurs when the immune system mistakes proteins in certain raw produce for pollen proteins it already recognizes as a threat. An example being that ragw**d-allergic patients frequently react to melons, bananas, zucchinis, cucumbers, and sunflower seeds.*

For allergists and practice staff, an Oral Allergy Syndrome complaint is a practical prompt to evaluate pollen sensitization to check for potential cross-reactivity.
