Nobody notices a coating that's doing its job.

The tank that didn't leak. The turbine that didn't corrode. The water plant that's run clean for 30 years. The fireproofing that bought people time to get out.

That's the work. Invisible when it's right. Catastrophic when it's wrong.

For 70 years our family has shown up to the jobs nobody else wants — inside the tank, up on the steel, in the heat and the respirator — because somebody has to be the first line of defense for the infrastructure this country runs on.

We don't do it for the spotlight. We do it because it matters at 2 a.m., when the thing we protected is the only thing standing between a plant and a very bad day.

A 22-year-old walked onto our jobsite with a coatings cert, zero student debt, and a starting wage that would make a lot of college grads go quiet.

Meanwhile we keep getting told the only path to a good life runs through a $120,000 diploma.

I'm not anti-college. I'm anti-default — anti taking on a mountain of debt for a degree somebody picked because nobody showed them another door.

Here's the other door: the trades are in the middle of a golden age. The generation that built this country is retiring faster than anyone's replacing them. The work can't be offshored. It can't be done by AI. And it pays.

We're hiring. We're training. We're building careers that start debt-free.

If you know a young person staring down a decision they're not sure about — send them our way. There's more than one way to build a life worth a damn.

Every company likes to talk about the work they do.

But the truth is, the work only happens because of the people who do it.

The foreman who gets up before daylight to plan the day.

The painter or blaster working in tough conditions and still taking pride in the details.

The safety team asking the extra question because they care about people going home the same way they arrived.

The project managers balancing schedules, customers, crews, documentation, and problem-solving all at once.

The office team making sure payroll, billing, insurance, equipment, and support keep moving behind the scenes.

None of it is easy.

And a lot of it goes unnoticed by people outside the company.

But it does not go unnoticed by us.

At Coatings Unlimited, we know our reputation is not built by a logo, a truck, or a brochure.

It is built by our people.

You can buy equipment.
You can bid work.
You can chase projects.

But you can’t fake pride.

Pride shows up in the details — the prep work no one sees, the safety steps that don’t get skipped, the clean containment, the properly applied coating, the final walkdown before calling a job complete.

In industrial construction, the difference between average and excellent is often attitude.

It’s the person who says, “That’s not good enough yet.”

June is National Safety Month — but in construction, safety can’t just be a monthly reminder. It has to be how we operate every single day.

In our industry, the work is physical, fast-moving, and often high-risk. One missed step, one shortcut, or one ignored hazard can change a life forever.

Safety is not paperwork.
Safety is not a slogan.
Safety is leadership in action.

It’s speaking up when something doesn’t look right.
It’s taking care of the person working next to you.
It’s planning the work, using the right equipment, and refusing to let schedule or pressure override judgment.

Leadership isn’t a title.

It’s how you show up.

It’s not just what you say in the big moments. It’s the daily habits, the small interactions, the tone you set, and the way people feel after they’ve worked with you.

Here are 7 reminders every leader needs:

1️⃣ Laugh – If people can’t laugh with you, they probably won’t fully trust you. Humor creates connection.

2️⃣ Learn – Technology changes. Attitudes change. Relationships evolve. Leaders have to keep growing.

3️⃣ Listen – Put the phone down. Be present. People can tell when they truly have your attention.

4️⃣ Language – Tone matters. The words we choose can either build engagement or quietly break it down.

5️⃣ Lagniappe – The little extras matter. The extra effort, the extra thank-you, the extra follow-up. Those things create loyalty.

6️⃣ Legacy – You are leaving one whether you choose to think about it or not. The question is: what kind?

7️⃣ Love – Love what you do, who you do it with, and who you do it for. People can feel that energy.

Leadership is a muscle.

Coatings Unlimited is the first line of defense for American infrastructure.

That's a sentence I've been working on for a long time. Locked it in this week.

Here's why it matters more than a tagline:

Every refinery, power plant, semiconductor fab, water treatment facility, and government installation in this country is in a quiet war with fire, water, corrosion, and time. We're the specialists who keep that war from being lost.

The steel and concrete that built America doesn't protect itself. Somebody has to.

For 70+ years and five generations, that's been us — and now we have language that matches the mission.

To our crews, our PMs, our clients, and the next generation deciding whether the trades are worth their time: this is the work. And it's worth doing.

Pressure, deadlines, and stress amplify conflict—and influence breaks down when trust is weak.

The most effective leaders I’ve seen:

• Build trust before they need it

May is Mental Health Awareness Month — and in construction, this matters.

Our industry is built on grit, toughness, and showing up every day. But real strength also means knowing when to speak up — and knowing when to check on the person next to you.

Recently, our Safety Coordinator came on site to talk with our team about mental health and su***de prevention.

It was a powerful reminder that safety is more than PPE, procedures, and jobsite hazards.

Safety is people.

The long hours, pressure, travel, and physical demands of this work are real. So is the responsibility we have to look out for one another.

A strong crew doesn’t just get the job done.

A strong crew takes care of its own.

Mental health matters. Su***de prevention matters. Our people matter.
