June is National Safety Month — but in construction, safety can’t just be a monthly reminder. It has to be how we operate every single day.

In our industry, the work is physical, fast-moving, and often high-risk. One missed step, one shortcut, or one ignored hazard can change a life forever.

Safety is not paperwork.
Safety is not a slogan.
Safety is leadership in action.

It’s speaking up when something doesn’t look right.
It’s taking care of the person working next to you.
It’s planning the work, using the right equipment, and refusing to let schedule or pressure override judgment.

At Coatings Unlimited, we believe the goal is simple: everyone goes home the same way they came in — every day.

This month is a great reminder, but the real standard is what we do when nobody is watching.

Safety first. Safety always.

Leadership isn’t a title.

It’s how you show up.

It’s not just what you say in the big moments. It’s the daily habits, the small interactions, the tone you set, and the way people feel after they’ve worked with you.

Here are 7 reminders every leader needs:

1️⃣ Laugh – If people can’t laugh with you, they probably won’t fully trust you. Humor creates connection.

2️⃣ Learn – Technology changes. Attitudes change. Relationships evolve. Leaders have to keep growing.

3️⃣ Listen – Put the phone down. Be present. People can tell when they truly have your attention.

4️⃣ Language – Tone matters. The words we choose can either build engagement or quietly break it down.

5️⃣ Lagniappe – The little extras matter. The extra effort, the extra thank-you, the extra follow-up. Those things create loyalty.

6️⃣ Legacy – You are leaving one whether you choose to think about it or not. The question is: what kind?

7️⃣ Love – Love what you do, who you do it with, and who you do it for. People can feel that energy.

Leadership is a muscle.

And whether we realize it or not, we are always influencing the people around us. The goal is to be intentional enough that our influence makes the team stronger.

Coatings Unlimited is the first line of defense for American infrastructure.

That's a sentence I've been working on for a long time. Locked it in this week.

Here's why it matters more than a tagline:

Every refinery, power plant, semiconductor fab, water treatment facility, and government installation in this country is in a quiet war with fire, water, corrosion, and time. We're the specialists who keep that war from being lost.

The steel and concrete that built America doesn't protect itself. Somebody has to.

For 70+ years and five generations, that's been us — and now we have language that matches the mission.

To our crews, our PMs, our clients, and the next generation deciding whether the trades are worth their time: this is the work. And it's worth doing.

Leadership isn’t about authority.

It’s about influence.

In construction, we’re often technically right… but relationally ineffective.

Pressure, deadlines, and stress amplify conflict—and influence breaks down when trust is weak.

The most effective leaders I’ve seen:

• Build trust before they need it

• Lead with expertise, not ego

• Handle hard conversations early

• Use influence instead of force

Small behaviors—tone, listening, follow-through—create massive downstream impact.

Influence builds trust.

Trust enables hard conversations.

And that’s where real leadership shows up.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month — and in construction, this matters.

Our industry is built on grit, toughness, and showing up every day. But real strength also means knowing when to speak up — and knowing when to check on the person next to you.

Recently, our Safety Coordinator came on site to talk with our team about mental health and su***de prevention.

It was a powerful reminder that safety is more than PPE, procedures, and jobsite hazards.

Safety is people.

The long hours, pressure, travel, and physical demands of this work are real. So is the responsibility we have to look out for one another.

A strong crew doesn’t just get the job done.

A strong crew takes care of its own.

Mental health matters. Su***de prevention matters. Our people matter.

I was in Memphis recently visiting one of our jobsites, and the crew put together a crawfish boil while we were there.

Nothing fancy. Just good food, good people, and a chance to spend time with the team.

One thing you realize when you’re on a jobsite is that a company’s reputation is not built in an office. It is built in the field — by the people showing up every day, solving problems, working safely, and taking pride in the details most people will never see.

That is especially true in our line of work. Travel, long hours, tough conditions, and demanding schedules are part of the job. So when you get a chance to sit down with the crew, share a meal, and hear what is really happening on the ground, it matters.

Appreciate the Memphis team for the hard work, the hospitality, and the reminder that the best part of this business is still the people.

At Coatings Unlimited, the work matters — but the people doing the work matter more.

We recently attended a captive insurance meeting to better understand how strong safety practices can directly impact our company, our employees, and our customers.

Insurance may not sound exciting — but here’s why it matters.

In a captive insurance program, companies like ours don’t just “buy insurance” and move on. We take an active role in managing risk, preventing claims, and controlling long-term costs.

The safer we work, the better the results can be.

That benefits everyone:

✅ Our employees — because safety protects our people and helps them get home safely every day
✅ Our customers — because safer jobs are better planned, better managed, and more reliable
✅ Our company — because fewer claims can mean lower costs and stronger financial performance
✅ Our future — because disciplined risk management helps us keep growing, investing, and creating opportunity

At Coatings Unlimited, safety is not just a rule or a slogan. It is part of how we protect our people, serve our clients, and build a stronger company for the long term.

At the end of the day, smart risk management is really about taking care of people.

Cash flow does not improve by accident. It improves through discipline.

It is easy to focus only on revenue, but strong companies know that cash flow is what keeps the business moving. It funds payroll, equipment, materials, training, growth, and the ability to take care of customers without hesitation.

Improving cash flow means tightening the little things:

sending invoices faster,
tracking change orders in real time,
staying ahead of collections,
managing costs with urgency,
and making sure every project is executed with discipline from start to finish.

Profit matters.
Growth matters.
But cash flow is what gives a company strength.

The businesses that win over time are not always the loudest.

They are the ones that stay sharp, stay disciplined, and protect the flow of cash that keeps everything alive.

Cash flow is not just accounting.
It is operational excellence.

Performance improvement does not happen by accident. It is built on a cycle that never stops:

Knowledge. Skill. Practice. Attitude.

Knowledge gives people the understanding to do the job right.
Skill turns that understanding into capability.
Practice sharpens that capability into consistency.
Attitude is what keeps a person hungry enough to keep improving.

When attitude is strong, people keep learning.
When people keep learning, knowledge grows.
When knowledge grows, skill gets better.
When skill gets better, practice produces stronger results.
And when that cycle keeps moving, performance rises.

The best teams do not rely on motivation alone.
They build habits. They train. They repeat. They take pride in the details. They hold the line on standards when nobody is watching.
That is how better workers become better teammates.
That is how better teammates build better crews.
And that is how better crews deliver better results for customers, project after project.

Performance is not a one-time event.
It is a cycle.
And the companies that commit to that cycle are the ones that separate themselves over time.

The definition of safety is evolving. And it should.

There was a time when safety was measured mostly by the visible things: hard hats, safety glasses, harnesses, permits, and policies. Those things still matter. They always will.

But real safety has to mean more.

It means planning work in a way that reduces chaos before the crew ever steps onto the job.
It means better coordination between trades.
It means cleaner communication.
It means making sure the right manpower, equipment, training, and access are in place before pressure starts building.
And yes, it also means recognizing that safety is not only physical.

Fatigue affects judgment.
Stress affects focus.
Distraction creates risk.

When people are mentally drained, physically worn down, or afraid to speak up, the job becomes less safe for everyone.

The best safety cultures are not built on compliance alone. They are built on preparation, discipline, communication, and respect for the people doing the work.

At the end of the day, safety is about creating conditions where people can perform at a high level, protect one another, and go home the same way they came in.

Safety is not just about avoiding accidents.

It is about building better conditions for people to succeed.
