MK & Associates, LLC We are a national forensic engineering firm relied upon by law firms, insurance It is one thing to have expert analysis on your side.

MK & Associates, LLC (MK) is a national forensic engineering and fire investigation firm. Started by Mark Ezra and Kalanit Chappell in 2006, MK has shaped itself into what it is today–a leading resource for thorough, objective engineering analysis. In the United States and Canada, we provide a wide variety of litigation support and risk-reduction analysis. It is another to make that analysis clear and understandable to non-engineers. That is the true strength of MK. Breaking down complex calculations and concepts into easily understood explanations has been our distinguishing ability. This skill comes naturally to our team of engineers and fire investigators as many of them are also college professors. In conjunction with that, we offer a unique multi-disciplinary “teamwork” approach. Our highly trained, extremely qualified engineers and fire investigators are experts in their respective fields. On investigative matters, they are able to consult with each other to combine their individual expertise, bringing a comprehensive analysis to each project. MK also has in-house capabilities for testing and producing demonstrative evidence. Our facility allows engineers to design and carry out tests that accurately represent the conditions, equipment and products in question, and that are scientifically sound, repeatable and defendable. We also have engineers who specialize in building models, creating hand and computer generated illustrations and animations, and providing expert photography, including night photography. Just as we translate complex issues into clear and concise spoken testimony, MK takes the same approach in developing visual demonstrative evidence to enhance your position.

One area to explore with potential clients who have been in an accident involving a motorcycle is whether or not the motorcycle is configured with the proper tires. You would be surprised how many are not! Fitment is specific per the OEM including aspect ratio, load and speed ratings.

We are able to determine that for you should you wish to determine that for your potential motorcycle cases. Call Stephen Markley at 314-744-4033 today!

Engineering Analyses of Injury-Producing Events

Technical Notes For The Non-Engineer

When a vehicle turns left across a motorcyclist’s path, an important question is whether the rider had enough time to perceive the danger and react. GPS tracking data, when available, can help answer that question.

MK & Associates, LLC (MKA) was retained to analyze a collision involving a company-owned automobile and a motorcycle. The employee driving the automobile was traveling southbound and turning left toward a residential garage. The motorcyclist was traveling northbound, straight ahead. Both vehicles had been operating within the posted speed limit and their respective lanes, and neither driver’s view of oncoming traffic was obstructed.
The automobile struck the left side of the motorcycle near the rider’s footrest, directly injuring the rider’s unprotected left leg and causing severe, permanent injuries.

The automobile driver stated that he had stopped before turning and activated his left-turn signal. However, GPS records obtained during discovery showed that the car slowed to approximately 4 mph but did not stop before the turn. The claimed turn-signal use could not be independently verified through physical evidence.

The defense argued that the motorcyclist should have recognized the car’s intention to turn and taken evasive action. It also suggested that the absence of such action reflected inattention or possible impairment.
The engineering analysis told a different story.

At 4 mph, the car traveled approximately 5.9 feet per second. To reach the approximate center of the 10-foot-wide northbound lane, it needed to travel only 5 feet—about 0.85 seconds. Using a 1.5-second combined perception-reaction time for an unexpected hazard, the analysis found that the motorcyclist did not have sufficient time to respond before impact, regardless of whether braking or evasive action was attempted.

Why This Matters
This case illustrates why collision analyses should account for both objective vehicle data and the time a human needs to recognize and respond to a developing hazard. A visible approaching vehicle is not necessarily an immediate threat; the critical interval begins when its movement creates a hazard requiring a response.

Key evidence: GPS speed and non-stop data, roadway geometry, and consideration of an appropriate perception-reaction time for the vehicle operator.

Okay, I know I'm not a "real" litigator and thankfully, haven't set foot in a court in years. But even I can tell that this is a big deal in today's AI environment. Witnesses (experts and otherwise), you need to be aware that whatever you feed into a public AI / large language model likely now is di...
