You may have seen some news about the President’s new Executive Order on red-dyed diesel. If the plan moves forward as intended, it could temporarily allow off-road diesel — the red fuel normally used in farm equipment, construction equipment and other non-highway uses — to be used in highway vehicles without immediately paying the usual federal diesel tax of about 24 cents per gallon. That could help add some flexibility to the diesel supply and potentially ease some pressure on fuel costs. It does not mean that heating oil can simply be put into trucks, and for now the federal tax is being deferred, not necessarily eliminated.
There are still some important details to work out, especially here in Pennsylvania. State fuel taxes and rules still apply unless Pennsylvania takes separate action, and federal agencies still need to issue guidance explaining exactly how the program will work. So for now, nothing changes at Hollenbach Oil — but this is something we’ll be watching closely. If the final rules create a real opportunity to improve supply or reduce costs for our customers, we’ll be ready to take advantage of it.
