Vashon Heating & Cooling

Vashon Heating & Cooling Whether it's your heating system, cooling needs, water systems, or air quality, we understand the unique challenges of island living because we live here too.

After three decades on Vashon, we've had the pleasure of serving our island neighbors! My dad George started with Seattle Heating back in the early '60s, and he taught my oldest brother Bugs everything he knew. My brother Joe learned from Bugs, and when it was my turn, Joe took me under his wing as his apprentice at Gas Appliance Service in Seattle. I spent years learning the craft alongside him,

then headed to Brudvik School of Refrigeration in 1980 to really understand the why behind the work I was already doing. Jane and I took the leap and started our own company in 1981, serving folks throughout the Seattle area. But something special happened in the mid-'90s—Vashon residents started asking if we'd bring our services to the island. When we made that move in 1996, it felt like coming home. Our neighbors here weren't just customers; they became part of our extended family. Looking back, deciding to focus on caring for island homes was one of the best choices we ever made. When it comes to your home's heating and cooling, you deserve more than just a service call—you deserve a partner who truly cares about your family's long-term comfort and peace of mind.

Meet Dan.

Dan Schmaus has been keeping island homes comfortable since before most of us knew what a heat pump was. Over 50 years in the HVAC trade will do that to you.

Now he's sharing what he knows.

We're excited to introduce Dan's Home Comfort Series — short, practical videos from our owner, designed to help Vashon homeowners understand the systems that keep their homes running. No jargon. No sales pitch. Just honest, useful knowledge from someone who's seen it all.

First up: Water Valves.

What are they? Where do you find them? What can you do to keep them working the way they should? Dan breaks it all down in plain language — the same way he'd explain it standing in your utility room.

Because an informed homeowner is a comfortable homeowner.

Why your filter looks gray on Vashon

If you pulled your air filter this spring and it came out looking like the inside of a wood stove, you are not alone. Marine air carries fine particulates that load up filters faster here than almost anywhere on the mainland.

A good rule for island homes: check your filter every 30 days, swap it every 60 to 90. If you have pets or you run the system hard during a windstorm, lean toward 60.

If you are not sure what filter to buy or where it lives, send us a photo of your system. We will point you in the right direction. 206-463-1777.

Story from last week that stuck with us.

We showed up for a routine tune-up and found a filter so packed with dust it had basically become a solid wall. The homeowner had no idea. System was working twice as hard as it needed to for probably a year.

Swapped it out in 5 minutes. Owner said the house felt different that same afternoon.

That's the thing about maintenance. It's invisible when it's working. And the problems build so gradually you stop noticing them.

We're not saying this to scare anyone. Just a reminder that the small stuff really does matter.

Has something like this ever happened at your place? Drop a comment. We've heard some good ones over the years.

5 signs your heat pump is trying to tell you something:

1. It runs constantly but the temperature never quite gets there
2. Your energy bill crept up without any obvious reason
3. You hear clicking, rattling, or grinding when it kicks on
4. Some rooms feel noticeably different from others
5. It's been more than a year since anyone looked at it

Any of these sound familiar?

Save this post and share it with a neighbor who might need it. Heat pumps are easy to ignore until they're not.

We're always happy to take a look before something turns into a bigger problem. That's what we're here for.

Real talk: when did you last have your heating or cooling system serviced?

Most manufacturers recommend once a year. Not because something's wrong, but because a little preventive attention keeps small things from turning into bigger ones.

We've been taking care of Vashon homes since 1994. In 30 years, the thing we see most often is systems that just needed a little more attention before something went sideways.

If it's been a while, we'd love to get you on our schedule before summer arrives and everyone's calling at once.

Drop a comment or give us a call. We'll find a time that works for you.

Here's a question for Vashon homeowners:

Do you know where your furnace filter is?

No judgment. You'd be surprised how many people have lived in a house for years and never thought about it.

If you DO know where yours is: drop a comment and tell us when you last changed it.

If you have NO idea: drop a comment and we'll help you figure it out. Seriously. Model number, address, whatever you've got. We'll point you in the right direction.

We've been in island homes since 1994. Happy to help any neighbor out.

Island living is a lot of things. Damp winters are part of the deal.

The moisture we get here on Vashon puts extra wear on heating systems and can affect the air quality inside your home. If you've noticed a musty smell lately, or your home just feels heavier and damper than it should, your HVAC system might need some attention.

One easy thing you can do right now: check that your outdoor unit isn't sitting in standing water or packed in wet leaves from the winter.

If anything looks off or you want a set of experienced eyes on your system, we're a call away.

We've been taking care of island homes since 1994. We know what Vashon winters do to equipment.

Got a room in your house that's always too hot or too cold no matter what you do?

Nine times out of ten, the problem isn't the room. It's airflow.

A few common causes:

- A blocked or closed supply vent
- Furniture sitting over a return air vent
- A dirty filter slowing down the whole system
- Ductwork that needs attention

The fix is often simpler than you'd think. Start with the easy stuff first: make sure all your vents are open and nothing is sitting on top of them.

If you've checked all that and the problem is still there, give us a call. We're good at tracking these things down.

One question we get asked a lot: how do I know when to repair vs. replace?

Honest answer from us: it depends on a few things.

Age of the system. Cost of the repair. How efficiently it's been running lately. A system that's 15 years old with a major repair need is usually worth a real conversation about replacement. A younger system with something minor? Almost always worth fixing.

We'll always give you the straight story. No pressure, no pushing you toward something you don't need. Just an honest look at what makes sense for your home and your budget.

That's how we've operated since 1994, and it's not changing.
