The microwave clock might have been adjusted, but what about your thermostat? If you use a heating schedule and yours didn’t adjust automatically when the clocks rolled back on the 1st, it could be warming the house an hour earlier than you intended. Take a minute to check the time and make sure the schedule still matches when you’re home, away, and asleep. No need to heat an empty house because the clock’s off. If the settings look right but your home still isn’t comfortable, call Southern Air & Heat at 803-630-2550. We’ll help you sort it out.

Before you turn the heat up another degree, take a quick look at your vents. A couch pushed over a floor register or a rug covering part of it can keep warm air from reaching the room. Make sure supply vents are open and uncovered, and keep return grilles clear so air can circulate. Sometimes a small adjustment helps more than another tap on the thermostat. Still having trouble getting comfortable? Call Southern Air & Heat at 803-630-2550, and we’ll help you figure out what’s going on.

Clocks fall back this Sunday, November 1st. While you’re making the rounds Sunday, press the test buttons on your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and replace batteries as needed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep that monthly test on your calendar, too. A few minutes well spent can make all the difference one day.

Before you blame the house for being haunted, listen for when that noise happens. A little ticking or popping when the heat starts or stops can be the metal ductwork expanding and contracting as its temperature changes. A soft click at startup can be normal, too. A loud bang when the furnace lights, grinding, or a new squeal is a different story and shouldn’t get written off as spooky house noises. Leave the system off if it bangs at ignition, and call Southern Air & Heat at 803-630-2550 to have it checked. That’s one mystery better left to an HVAC tech.

A furnace doesn’t have to quit completely to tell you something’s wrong. New rattling or squealing, rooms that stay cold while others warm up, or a system that struggles to keep up are all worth having checked before winter.
On a gas furnace, a steady yellow burner flame instead of blue needs prompt attention because it can signal a combustion problem. Leave the system off until a professional checks it, and don’t try adjusting the burners yourself. For help getting to the bottom of those warning signs, call Southern Air & Heat at 803-630-2550.

Getting a little shock every time you touch a doorknob? Static, dry skin, and a scratchy throat can all show up when the air in your home gets too dry. As cooler outdoor air comes inside and gets heated, its relative humidity drops, so the house can feel dry even when the temperature is comfortable. A small indoor humidity monitor can help you see what’s going on before you keep turning up the thermostat.

If your home hasn’t felt quite right since the heat came on, call Southern Air & Heat at 803-630-2550. We can help you sort out what’s affecting your comfort.

Only in South Carolina can you run the AC after lunch and want the heat on by bedtime. This in-between stretch of fall can be confusing for you and your system. Instead of flipping back and forth between heat and cool all day, try picking one comfortable range and letting the thermostat handle the switch. If yours has an auto setting, leave a few degrees between the heating and cooling temperatures so they aren't fighting each other.

And the first time the heat kicks on for the season, a slight dusty smell for a few minutes is normal. If that smell sticks around, or the system seems to struggle switching over, call Southern Air & Heat at 803-630-2550.

Most ceiling fans have a small switch on the motor housing that changes which way the blades spin. Turn the fan off, flip that switch so the blades run clockwise, and set it on low. Warm air naturally rises and collects near the ceiling, and that gentle clockwise spin helps move it back down to where you're actually sitting. It takes about two minutes and can help a room feel cozier without touching the thermostat. Need a hand getting your heating system ready for the season? Call Southern Air & Heat at 803-630-2550.
