South Africa is now the world’s biggest citrus exporter by volume! 🍊🇿🇦

Here is a little piece of good news with a lovely South African flavour, and possibly a squeeze of orange juice on the side.

South Africa has officially overtaken Spain to become the world’s largest exporter of citrus by volume, after shipping a record 2.9 million tons of citrus in 2025. That includes the oranges, lemons, grapefruit and soft citrus that travel from our farms to tables across the world.

This is not the same as being the world’s biggest citrus producer, because some countries grow huge volumes for their own domestic markets. But when it comes to exporting citrus fruit, South Africa is now right at the top.

It is a remarkable achievement for our farmers, farm workers, packhouses, exporters, truck drivers, port workers and everyone involved in a very demanding supply chain. The citrus industry is also a major employer, supporting rural towns and farming communities across provinces such as Limpopo, the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal.

The European Union and the UK remain major destinations, but South African citrus is also reaching markets in the Middle East, China, the United States and beyond.

Sometimes good news comes in gold medals.
Sometimes it comes in cartons. 🍋🍊
