Future mining professionals from the University of Johannesburg's UJ Mining Forum recently spent two days at Canyon Coal's , gaining valuable insight into the technical and operational aspects of mining.
The programme combined classroom-style presentations with practical exposure to mining operations. Students heard from a range of industry professionals, including Chief Health and Safety Officer Sipho Mngomezulu, Environmental Officer Khomotso Mpahla, Geologist Jesse Oosthuizen, who also shared insights into mine surveying, Senior Mine Planner Thabang Matlala, who highlighted the importance of mine design and planning in supporting safe and efficient operations, and Ingwenya Metallurgist Sibongile Makhalema, who provided an overview of coal processing and beneficiation.
The visit also included guided tours of Khanye's South Pit and North Pit, led by Canyon Coal COO Jarmi Steyn and Khanye Mine Manager Kgotso Mongalo.
