🏆 Congratulations to Burdekin Shire Council on being recognised at the 2026 LGMA Awards for Excellence for the innovative RegenAqua Macroalgal Facility.
This award is a testament to Council's vision, leadership and willingness to embrace new approaches to wastewater treatment that deliver meaningful outcomes for both the community and the environment.
The RegenAqua Macroalgal Facility in the Burdekin is demonstrating how nature-based infrastructure can transform wastewater treatment by removing nutrients before they reach sensitive waterways connected to the Great Barrier Reef catchment. By harnessing naturally occurring macroalgae, the facility provides a low-energy, cost-effective solution that reduces operational costs while creating valuable biomass that can be reused across agriculture and industry.
We are incredibly proud that RegenAqua, developed by Pacific Bio, was selected as the technology partner for this world-first project and grateful for the trust Burdekin Shire Council placed in our team to help bring this vision to life.
This recognition belongs to the many people who contributed to the project's success, including Council staff, industry partners, contractors and the broader community.
Congratulations to Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort, Julian Tickle and the entire Burdekin Shire Council team on this well-deserved achievement.
From a regional Queensland council to a globally relevant wastewater solution, Burdekin is showing what is possible when innovation, collaboration and environmental stewardship come together.
We look forward to continuing our partnership and demonstrating how innovative, nature-based solutions can help shape the future of sustainable water management across Australia and beyond.
