Demolition works at the former Qenos Plastics and Elastomers sites are well underway, and you can already notice changes to the skyline and appearance as many of the major structures have been removed.

Demolition at the former Qenos Resins and Olefins sites will also commence soon. Ausdecom will be the principal contractor executing all demolition works at the Qenos Altona sites.

For any questions or information as demolition progresses Ausdecom can be contacted at [email protected]

Separately, the level crossing removal project (not associated with Qenos) is progressing on Maidstone Street. Please note part of the former Qenos Plastics site is being used as a laydown area and site compound for the project. This may impact local traffic as construction continues - visit https://bigbuild.vic.gov.au/projects/level-crossing-removal-project for details.

We are pleased to inform you that the flaring phase of the Altona Olefins Plant Makesafe Project has now been successfully completed, and the Olefins Flare has been safely and permanently shut down. This milestone was achieved alongside the removal of most materials from the site.

The next phase of the Makesafe Project, which will continue until the first quarter of 2025, will involve the cleaning of several vessels and the effluent treatment area. While flaring has concluded, there may still be some odours related to the cleaning activities. As with previous phases, we are committed to minimizing any disruption and greatly appreciate your understanding during this time.

For updates on any potential impacts to the community, please visit the Qenos Altona page.

If you have any general inquiries, please contact Alan Findlay, Environmental Health Coordinator, at [email protected] or (03) 9258 7333. For immediate concerns, the Environmental Action Line is available 24/7 at 1800 061 050, where all reports are logged and promptly addressed

Flaring activity update:
As previously communicated, there may be occasions of higher flaring for specific tasks as part of the Plant Makesafe Project. We want to inform you that there will be flaring activity occurring overnight on Tuesday, October 22nd, starting around 7pm and planned to conclude between 9am and 10am on Wednesday, October 23rd. The timing has been arranged to ensure that the peak flaring occurs during the day.

This flaring is necessary to ensure that all material is safely removed from our feedstock supplier's pipeline and is part of essential safety and maintenance operations. You may notice visible flames and hear noise during this time. While we aim to minimize any disruption, we appreciate your understanding as we carry out this activity.

Regular updates on potential community impacts, such as noise or odour, will be posted on the Qenos Altona page.
For general inquiries, contact Environmental Health Coordinator Alan Findlay at [email protected] or (03) 9258 7333. We will continue to actively manage the flare to minimize its impact, particularly during night-time hours.
Updates on potential community impacts, such as noise or odour, will continue to be posted here on the Qenos Altona page.

Qenos Altona Final Shutdown Update

Qenos will begin its final shutdown on 30th September 2024, in two phases: Plant Operations shutdown and Plant Makesafe.
During the Plant Operations shutdown, there will be intermittent flaring as the Qenos Olefins plant winds down over 7 to 10 days. Qenos will actively manage the flare to minimize its impact on our neighbours, with an emphasis on reducing flaring as far as practical at night.
The Plant Makesafe phase will involve round-the-clock work, with a focus on noise minimisation during night hours. Low-level flaring will continue until February 2025, with occasional higher flaring for specific tasks. Night-time flaring will be managed to minimize disruption.
Regular updates on potential community impacts, such as noise or odour, will be posted on the Qenos Altona page.

For general inquiries, contact Environmental Health Coordinator Alan Findlay at [email protected] or (03) 9258 7333.

During the course of April 2024, the Qenos Group was sold to LAOP BidCo Pty Ltd. On 17 April 2024, Jason Preston, Jason Ireland, Matthew Caddy and Damien Pasfield (of McGrathNicol) were appointed Voluntary Administrators of the Qenos Group.

On 23 May 2024, creditors of the Qenos Group resolved that the Qenos Group entities execute Deeds of Company Arrangement (DOCAs). The DOCAs were executed on 13 June 2024 with the Voluntary Administrators being appointed as Deed Administrators. The DOCAs provide funding to (i) facilitate the permanent shutdown and make safe of the Qenos Group sites at Altona, Vic and Botany, NSW, (ii) pay Qenos employee entitlements in full, and (iii) provide a return to ordinary unsecured creditors.

Following discussions with key stakeholders it has now been confirmed that the operations at Qenos' Altona Plants will take feed out by 30th September 2024 for the final time. Shutdown and make safe planning for these plants are well underway. Make safe activities will continue for several months, ultimately preparing the Plants to be demolished. During the make safe process it is possible that the community will observe changes in the noises and odours associated with our previous operations. Throughout the entirety of the make safe and remediation process the safety of our employees, the community and the environment remains our first priority.

We will update the community closer to the point of feed being taken out of the Olefins plant, which will result in periods of flaring.

For general enquires please contact our Environmental Health Coordinator Alan Findlay (email: [email protected] or phone:(03) 9258 7333).

The Environmental Action Line (1800 061 050) is a 24-hour free-call hotline that residents can call to report a potential problem related to the Altona Chemical Complex operation. Every call is recorded, and all calls are investigated immediately.
