Researchers at the University of Helsinki have discovered a group of radiation-resistant bacteria that can break down parts of nuclear waste far more quickly than traditional storage methods. These microbes, closely related to the famously tough Deinococcus radiodurans, can withstand extreme radiation and actually use radioactive materials as an energy source. Through bioremediation, they transform dangerous compounds into forms that are much less harmful.

Finland has begun testing this promising biological solution at the Onkalo nuclear waste repository, one of the most advanced underground storage facilities in the world. If successful, it could revolutionize how nations manage long-lasting radioactive waste.
