What is a tempering valve, and what does it do? The valve that stops your hot water from scalding someone. It blends hot and cold at your hot water service so the water reaching your bathroom taps is limited to 50 degrees, the legal maximum. Your tank still stores water at 60 degrees or higher to kill bacteria. The tempering valve bridges the two: safety at the tap, hygiene in the tank. Required on hot water installs in Australia, fitted by a licensed plumber.
