Can community feedback actually change the VNI West route?

Yes – it already has.

Planning for VNI West has been underway since 2019, with the project's route refined over time.

What started as a broad area of interest has been narrowed to a much smaller preferred easement – informed by technical studies, environmental assessments and input from landholders and communities.

Here's what that looks like in practice:

▶️ More than 250 proposed tower locations have been adjusted in response to landholder feedback, as well as technical considerations
▶️ Regular ongoing engagement with more than 500 landholders, including more than 1,100 landholder meetings and 240 field surveys on private properties
▶️ 47 regional pop-ups and conversations with more than 1,700 attendees at community events
▶️ 16 Community Reference Group (CRG) meetings
▶️ 583 community submissions across the Project Assessment Consultation Report (PACR), Project Assessment Draft Report (PADR) and Additional Consultation Report (ACR) processes

Not every request can be accommodated or every suggestion adopted. Every decision must also consider engineering, safety, environment and planning requirements.

But community and landholder feedback is always carefully considered and continues to inform the planning and development of VNI West.

Community Reference Group minutes from the 21 April meeting in Donald are now available online.

The group discussed:
▪️Project, survey and Environment Effects Statement updates
▪️The role of Iberdrola Australia Networks
▪️Community benefits and support
▪️Environmental surveys and access
▪️University of Canberra’s Just Transmission research project

Members also raised questions about land access, agriculture, insurance and how project planning can consider individual farming operations.

Why does the existing energy grid need upgrading?

Australia's electricity grid was built for a time when power mostly came from coal-fired power stations near open-cut coal mines.

Today, electricity is increasingly supplied by the cheapest forms of generation – wind and solar – which means the location of generation is changing and new transmission infrastructure is needed to connect new generation to the grid.

VNI West is designed to meet this challenge, by strengthening the backbone of the electricity network, between Victoria and New South Wales.

VNI West aerial surveys will take off this week updating our understanding of the project region's landforms and surface features 🛩️

Community members can expect:

▪ A small aircraft flying back-and-forth across the project area.
▪ Ground teams recording control points at 8 kilometre intervals.
▪ No disruptions to traffic or day-to-day activities.
