Did you know there are strict energy rating rules for new buildings in South Australia?

Here's what you need to know about the standards, and why underfloor heating is becoming one of the smartest choices you can make.

🏠 Residential buildings — the 7-star rule

Since 1 October 2024, all new homes in SA must meet the updated National Construction Code (NCC 2022). The biggest change? The minimum energy rating has jumped from 6 stars to 7 stars under the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS). That one extra star is a big deal, homes built to 7 stars use roughly 25% less energy for heating and cooling compared to the old 6-star standard.

But it's not just about stars. Compliance now has two parts:

Part 1 — Building fabric (the NatHERS star rating)
How well the shell of your home is designed, insulation, glazing, orientation, air sealing.

Part 2 — Whole-of-Home energy budget
A score (out of 100) based on the annual energy use of your fixed systems, heating & cooling, hot water, lighting, pool pumps, plus any solar or battery credits.
