The European Medicines Agency (EMA) published a draft reflection paper on opportunities to 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟯𝗥𝘀 in the safety testing of human medicines using 𝗻𝗼𝗻-𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀.

The public consultation closed on 31 January 2026, with the paper remaining listed as a draft on the EMA website.

The reflection paper examines existing regulatory flexibility for applying the 3Rs and discusses alternative approaches that could support their further implementation.

Regulatory Science Update | Zebrafish testing is advancing. But are the test guidelines keeping up? 🐟

Zebrafish are already incorporated into several OECD Test Guidelines for chemical hazard and risk assessment.

However, having an established test guideline does not mean every relevant toxicological effect can be detected reliably. A new critical review examines gaps that may limit the regulatory utility of zebrafish-based testing.

🧪 The challenge: translating scientific advances in zebrafish research into standardized, mechanistically informative and reliable regulatory methods.

Policy update | How can regulatory sandboxes support the next generation of medicines?

A regulatory sandbox establishes a time-limited framework in which developers can design, validate and test innovative medicines or methodologies in a controlled, real-world environment, under strict regulatory oversight.

What does this mean for EU pharmaceutical legislation?

The new framework allows regulatory sandboxes to be considered when genuine scientific or technical barriers prevent the development of innovative medicines under existing requirements. The aim is to explore targeted regulatory adaptations and generate learnings for future regulatory approaches, without compromising quality, safety or efficacy.

🤝 On 21 September 2026, the European Commission (EC) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) held a multi-stakeholder workshop to discuss how regulatory sandboxes can be implemented in practice.

Read-across is an important approach under the EU REACH Regulation to fill data gaps and reduce potentially unnecessary animal testing. Yet its acceptance in regulatory compliance checks remains challenging.

A new study published in 𝘈𝘓𝘛𝘌𝘟 by Roe et al. examines 2,722 European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) compliance check decisions from 2010 to 2025 to identify why read-across approaches fail.
