Barely touched your thermostat this summer? Your AC still put in the hours.

On every damp, grey day when your AC ran, it was also removing moisture from the air, and pulling moisture out of the air is some of the hardest work it does.

Here’s the catch: a wet summer can lead to algae buildup and clogs in the condensate drain, the line that carries that moisture away.

A musty smell or water pooling near your indoor unit can be a sign it’s time to call.

Give your system a quick look this weekend: check the filter and clear any rain-washed leaves or debris away from the outdoor unit. Then, book a maintenance visit before fall.

If your basement recently flooded, the water draining out doesn't mean the problem did.

You've probably already taken care of the hard part: You pumped it out, hauled out the ruined furniture / appliances, ran the dehumidifier, aired it out. But the water is only the part you can see. The trouble that shows up weeks later is the part that catches most homeowners off guard.

Here's what to watch for over the next 30 days:

💧 Humidity that lingers. A basement can look dry and still hold a lot of moisture in the air. Rising indoor humidity is often the first sign something's still damp behind the scenes.

🦠 Mould settling in. Mould doesn't need standing water to grow, it needs dampness and time, and a recently flooded basement gives a bit of both.

🌬️ Contaminated air that travels. Your furnace and ductwork move air through your whole home. If moisture or mould gets into that system, it doesn't stay in the basement. It ends up in the air your family breathes upstairs.

🔧 Equipment that took on water. If your furnace, water heater, or any of their gas and electrical parts sat in floodwater for any amount of time, they should be checked before you run them again, even if they seem fine right now.

🌫️ If the air outside looks hazy today, wildfire smoke may be affecting the air quality in your area.

While you can't control the air outside, you can take steps to help improve the air inside your home.

• Keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.
• Run your HVAC fan continuously to circulate and filter the air. 💨
• Replace your air filter if it is dirty or overdue.
• Consider a HEPA filtration system, if compatible with your HVAC system, to help capture fine airborne particles.
• Ask about a UV Air Purifier, which works with your HVAC system to help improve your home's indoor air quality. ✨

More AC sounds we get calls about, and what they actually mean:

🔹 Whistling from vents: ductwork leak or blocked vent
🔹 Bubbling or gurgling: refrigerant issue or condensate drain backing up
🔹 Rattling outside: loose panel on the outdoor unit (often a quick fix)
🔹 Squealing on start-up: worn blower belt or motor bearings
🔹 Loud humming with no airflow: capacitor or motor failure

Quick rule: anything new, anything sudden, anything that gets louder = worth a phone call.

Heading out of town this summer? Don't turn your AC all the way off.

We know it feels like you'd save money, but here's what actually happens:

🔹 Indoor humidity climbs fast in an empty house
🔹 Mould and mildew can develop in walls, carpets, and ductwork
🔹 Hardwood floors and furniture can warp
🔹 Your system has to work twice as hard to cool everything back down when you return

What to do instead: set the thermostat to 28°C while you're away. Warm enough to save energy. Cool enough to keep humidity in check.

A Wi-Fi thermostat makes this easier. Set it from the airport, check on it from your hotel.
