The Renewable Energy Storage Laboratory at Dalhousie University is seeking PhD students for fully funded PhD opportunities in sodium-ion batteries beginning September 1, 2026. The lab is led by Dr. Lukas Swan, P. Eng., who has 20+ years of experience, and is focused on developing reliable, efficient, practical and cost effective battery systems through research of batter energy storage technologies.

What happens when there isn’t enough electricity go around during peak demand times? Some large industrial companies that use a lot of power can agree to have their electricity service interrupted to make sure that residential customers don’t lose their power! This helps maintain grid reliability while lowering rates for the industrial users.

Natural gas accounts for 40% of Canada’s total energy supply. We don’t produce a lot of it in Atlantic Canada but we consume a fair bit for industrial needs, heating for homes and buildings such as schools and hospitals, and to produce electricity. We also have a liquified natural gas (LNG) terminal in New Brunswick and pipelines that connect Nova Scotia to the Northeastern pipeline network. In British Columbia, a majority of First Nations support LNG development, so what’s happening on the West Coast that we can learn from on the East Coast?

Net Zero Atlantic is hosting a tradeshow-style event call the ECT Innovation Floor on May 7, 2026, at Pier 21 in Halifax, NS. Researchers and innovators supported through the Net Zero Emerging Concepts and Technologies (ECT) Program will be sharing their work through live demonstrations, poster boards, and presentations.
