What happens when there isn’t enough electricity go around during peak demand times? Some large industrial companies that use a lot of power can agree to have their electricity service interrupted to make sure that residential customers don’t lose their power! This helps maintain grid reliability while lowering rates for the industrial users.

Natural gas accounts for 40% of Canada’s total energy supply. We don’t produce a lot of it in Atlantic Canada but we consume a fair bit for industrial needs, heating for homes and buildings such as schools and hospitals, and to produce electricity. We also have a liquified natural gas (LNG) terminal in New Brunswick and pipelines that connect Nova Scotia to the Northeastern pipeline network. In British Columbia, a majority of First Nations support LNG development, so what’s happening on the West Coast that we can learn from on the East Coast?

This year, we were pleased to give members of the Dasog Research Lab the opportunity to attend Hydrogen East | Halifax and Smart Energy | Halifax! Here’s what they had to say about their experience:

"We found it valuable to broaden our lab-based perspective and gain a clearer understanding of clean energy projects underway across Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada. Getting the opportunity to view these energy challenges through business, policy, and community lenses deepened our appreciation of how our lab research fits into the larger landscape. We’re excited by the innovative work in the region and look forward to staying engaged as collaboration and community involvement grow!"

“Hydrogen is in many ways a societal challenge, so if we want this transition to be successful, we will need physical and environmental scientists, engineers, economists, social scientists all working together.” – Dr. Mita Dasog

In this episode of Atlantic Canada’s Hydrogen Future podcast, Derek Estabrook spoke with Dr. Mita Dasog and Dr. Michael Freund from the Green Hydrogen Research Cluster at Dalhousie University. They discuss things like costs of green hydrogen production, developing catalysts, and building a supply chain from scratch.
