One re-used robot, a new purpose, and a lot of testing behind the scenes: Last week, we wrapped up a project giving a used robot a new application. Before shipping, we put the system through its paces during our Factory Acceptance Test (FAT). Like any good project, there were a few surprises along the way! A component needed attention in the very last minute, giving us the perfect opportunity to fine-tune things before the system left our shop.

Now, the robot is shipped and ready for its next chapter. 🚀

That's what good automation is about: making the most of existing equipment, solving challenges along the way, and making sure everything is ready for the job ahead.

Today is Kyle Kolke’s 15th Eascanniversary. He started here in 2011, and if you’ve worked on a project at Eascan in the last decade and a half, there’s a good chance Kyle has had a hand in it.

He started as a junior designer and moved up quickly. By 2013 he was already taking on senior-level work, and in 2016 he earned his CTTAM designation. Around that time he also became Eascan’s go-to person for vision systems, and then for robots, which was a big part of how we grew into the robotic work we do today.

He was also helping our junior designers long before it was officially part of his job. Today, as Mechanical Manager and head of M01, that’s a big part of what he does: he leads the mechanical design team, runs design reviews, signs off on FATs and SATs, and gets involved early in projects to catch problems before they turn into rework. A lot of the standards and habits that keep our mechanical work consistent came from Kyle. So did a lot of the designers who now know what they’re doing.

Kyle, thank you for 15 years of good work, good judgment, and patience with all of us. We’re lucky to have you. Congratulations on your Eascanniversary!

Machines are supposed to make our jobs easier, not send us to the emergency room. 😄 Machine guarding is one of those things that doesn't always get much attention until something goes wrong.

We design and supply custom machine guarding solutions for industrial equipment, robotic cells, and automated production lines. From safety fencing and physical barriers to access doors, interlocks, and integrated safety systems, there's quite a bit to consider when designing proper guarding.

And it's not just about putting a fence around a machine. Operators still need to do their jobs, maintenance teams need access to equipment, and production needs to keep moving. We can help design and supply guarding that makes sense for the application.

Because good machine guarding should protect people without getting in the way of doing their jobs! Keep the machines running and the people safe. That's the goal. ;)

Ever walked up to a machine, looked at the screen, and wondered who decided that pressing six buttons to start a motor was a good idea? 😄 That's where good HMI programming makes a difference.

HMI stands for Human-Machine Interface. It's the screen operators use to interact with equipment, monitor processes, adjust settings, troubleshoot faults, and keep production moving. We design and program HMIs for everything from individual machines to complex automated production lines with multiple machines, robots, and/or controls integrated.

And it's not just about making screens look nice. A well-designed HMI can make a real difference on the shop floor. Operators should be able to understand what's happening without digging through endless menus. Maintenance teams should be able to identify alarms and troubleshoot problems quickly. And production teams should have access to the information they need to make decisions.

We work with new equipment, existing systems that need an upgrade, and machines that have been running for decades but could use a more modern interface. :)

We're officially members of the Agricultural Manufacturers of Canada (AMC)! Agriculture is a huge part of Manitoba's economy, and we're excited to join a network of companies that design, manufacture, and support the equipment that keeps this industry moving.

No, we don't build tractors (yet! 😄), but we do quite a bit behind the scenes to support the companies that do. From manufacturing custom components for agricultural machinery to automating production lines for equipment manufacturers, our work touches many parts of the agricultural industry.

Think robotic welding of equipment frames and components, CNC machine tending, automated assembly, vision inspection for quality control, and custom machinery for manufacturing everything from tractor components to grain handling equipment.

We also work with controls and automation for grain elevators, conveyors, bulk material handling, sorting, weighing, and loading systems. Whether it's improving an existing machine, upgrading outdated controls, or designing something completely new, we help agricultural manufacturers increase productivity, improve safety, and tackle labour-intensive processes.

We're looking forward to meeting fellow AMC members, learning about the challenges agricultural manufacturers are facing, and exploring how automation can help solve them. After all, Manitoba knows a thing or two about agriculture, and we know a thing or two about making machines work. 😄

Don’t be afraid to build something for the first time, because every machine, system, and solution we create begins with a customer’s challenge and a willingness to explore what’s possible!

That has taken us into projects ranging from robotic molding automation and automated sawing cells to ladder-forming equipment, chemical packaging, and rejection and inspection systems. We’ve developed machines that throw curling rocks, move medical equipment through hospitals, and open railcar lids to help keep workers out of harm’s way. While the applications are different, the purpose is always rooted in what our customers need: a better way to handle a difficult process, support their team, or do something their existing equipment simply wasn’t designed to do.

Developing something new takes close collaboration, plenty of questions, and the patience to test, learn, and refine along the way, but that’s the work we enjoy. We bring engineering experience and curiosity, and you bring the knowledge of your operation that helps make the solution useful where it matters. You don’t need to come to us with a finished design or every detail figured out; sometimes the best starting point is, “We wish there was a machine that could do this.” 🔧
