Masterpiece or simulation? 🎨

Turns out swirls aren't just pretty. They occur throughout nature. Just as in The Starry Night, we see similar dynamics in our plasma simulation of a Facing Target Cathode magnetron built for low-damage deposition.

What you see are turbulent ExB drifts, electrons swirling where electric and magnetic fields cross, at speeds of up to 100 km/s. This turbulence only fully develops when we combine two types of power, steady direct and fast-alternating current. The turbulence then sweeps the plasma across the entire target surface.

Why that matters:
→ Much lower voltages needed to drive the same power
→ Far fewer high-energy negative oxygen ions hitting the wafer
→ Less damage to delicate oxide and perovskite films

This is the physics behind our 300 mm multi-source FTC platform CLUSTERLINE® 300, built for low-damage, epitaxial growth at industrial throughput.

Fabian Manke, Senior Scientist at Evatec, spotted the resemblance first. His verdict: "Clearly it was ExB turbulence all along."

Maybe Van Gogh knew something about plasma all along. 😉

Usually we work in nanometers. On Sunday, it was all about kilometers. 🏃

11 Evatec colleagues took part in the 3-Länder-Marathon at Lake Constance, a race through Germany, Austria and Switzerland:
🔹 1x Marathon
🔹 2x Half Marathon
🔹 8x Quarter Marathon

Together that's around 172 km. Congratulations to everyone who participated and finished! 💪

In this , we are taking a closer look at the people who support our customers worldwide. This time, we are proud to introduce Jan Schiess from our Customer Engineering team.

My name is Jan Schiess and I work in Customer Engineering, where I do my best to ensure we understand our customers' needs quickly and address them well. I joined Evatec at the end of 2025, when the Customer Engineering team was looking for additional support. It’s my first position after graduating. As a System Engineer, I get to know new components of our machines every week and as a newcomer, I'm also learning company-wide structures and processes from the ground up.

I studied mechanical engineering at ETH Zürich. Originally, I was drawn more towards aerodynamics, but also towards the mountains, so Trübbach was a good fit. 🙂

What I like most about Evatec is my team of young, motivated colleagues. What drives me every day is the goal of providing truly outstanding customer support.

Outside of work, I enjoy hiking ⛰️, catching up with friends from my university days 🤓, or watching an episode of National Geographic 📺.
