In regions south of the Yangtze River, savory rice dumplings are especially popular, with preserved vegetable and pork zongzi among the most beloved varieties. Aged preserved mustard greens bring a rich, savory aroma, while streaky pork adds a delicious depth of flavor. Together, these simple ingredients create a classic zongzi cherished by generations.

Just as time develops the distinctive flavor of preserved mustard greens, years of dedication shape the expertise of operation and maintenance staff. With professionalism and skill, they tackle complex equipment challenges and help ensure a reliable power supply, keeping the lights on in countless homes.

As the Dragon Boat Festival breeze sweeps across the farmlands of Heilongjiang, wind turbine blades turn steadily across the landscape. The aroma of zongzi drifts through the air alongside the flow of electricity, bringing warmth and light to countless homes.

In northeast China, premium broomcorn millet gives rise to a distinctive local delicacy: broomcorn millet zongzi. Unlike traditional glutinous rice zongzi, these golden dumplings are made with translucent, plump millet grains that create a soft, smooth texture with a delicate mouthfeel.

Wrapped in fresh green reed leaves, they carry a naturally sweet and mellow fragrance, offering a unique taste of Heilongjiang’s Dragon Boat Festival traditions.

As summer deepens and the Dragon Boat Festival approaches, Huaneng employees across the country are wrapping the flavors of their hometowns in bamboo leaves, while continuing their commitment to keeping the lights on. This festive season, we invite you to discover distinctive “Huaneng Zongzi” from different regions of China.

Beijing Red Jujube Zongzi represents one of the most classic Dragon Boat Festival flavors, carrying memories passed down through generations in the old hutongs of Beijing. Plump red jujubes are wrapped in glutinous rice and slowly cooked for hours. Unwrap the iris straw and peel back the reed leaves to reveal glossy rice grains surrounding a rich, sweet jujube filling. The soft texture and natural sweetness make every bite a taste of tradition and home.

As you enjoy this classic red jujube zongzi, may it bring wishes of good health, happiness, and growing prosperity to you and your loved ones.

Protecting biodiversity starts with science and innovation.

Two fish species endemic to the Lancang River—Paracobitis anguillioides and Barbodes labiatus—naturally reproduce at a slow rate and have long been considered difficult to breed artificially.

Through years of research and experimentation, colleagues at local hydropower stations have successfully overcome key technical challenges, achieving the full-cycle artificial domestication, breeding, and larval cultivation of both species.

This breakthrough fills an important gap in breeding technology and provides strong support for large-scale stock enhancement and the recovery of wild fish populations in the Lancang River basin, contributing to the long-term conservation of the region’s aquatic biodiversity.

Our hydropower station recently welcomed two adorable little visitors!

While walking through the residential compound, staff at Huaneng Xiaowan Hydropower Station spotted two young Oriental Scops Owls, a nationally protected Class II wild species. Still covered in fledgling feathers and learning to fly, the tiny owls had taken shelter beneath a roadside vehicle. Quietly huddled together, they looked just like children waiting for their parents after school.

With stray cats occasionally roaming the area, our colleagues kept a respectful distance while quietly monitoring the young birds to ensure they remained safe and undisturbed. They patiently waited for their mother to return.

Before long, the mother owl appeared with food in her beak. After feeding her chicks, she guided them to a hidden and safer spot, where the family disappeared back into nature.

A small but heartwarming reminder that people and wildlife can share the same environment in harmony.

Ahead of World Environment Day, the ocean received a special gift from Huaneng. A total of 7.9605 million juvenile marine organisms have been released into the coastal waters of Touyang Bay and Houshui Bay in Lingao, Hainan. More than an ecological initiative, it is Huaneng’s heartfelt tribute to the sea—a commitment to nurturing marine biodiversity and supporting healthier coastal ecosystems.
