Katalox-Light® + SuperOxy / Integrated PFAS Treatment Concept: One Filter. More Treatment Potential.

Cleaner Water. Brighter Tomorrow. Technology for a more resilient world.

The Goal:
Use the filter already treating your water. An additional PFAS stage may be avoided where verified performance meets the required outlet target.

The 4-Step Integrated Concept:

01 Remove Iron & Manganese: Katalox-Light® supports iron and manganese oxidation and retains the resulting solids. Fresh iron hydroxides create additional adsorption surfaces within the filter bed.

02 Capture Selected PFAS: Under suitable water chemistry, selected PFAS can bind to these iron-rich surfaces. The filter retains the loaded solids. Uptake depends on PFAS identity, pH, competing compounds, and contact time.

03 Regenerate with SuperOxy: For PFAS service, WatchWater® proposes a separate SuperOxy regeneration cycle in the vessel. Establish the dose, contact time, and restored capacity for Katalox-Light® through repeated-cycle testing.

04 Verify the Complete Cycle: Collect backwash, regeneration liquor, and rinses for controlled treatment. Confirm iron, manganese, and PFAS outlet performance before returning the filter to service.

Key Takeaways:
Routine iron and manganese service: backwashing.
Proposed PFAS service: backwashing plus validated SuperOxy regeneration.
Note: PFAS capture and regeneration performance must be demonstrated for the actual water. Capture alone does not prove PFAS destruction.

🧪 PFAS Science Series / 02: When iron becomes part of the solution 🧪
Fresh mineral surfaces. A new perspective on PFAS capture, with Katalox-Light® by WATCH WATER®.

💡 The Opportunity:
Dissolved iron is oxidised and precipitates as iron hydroxide. This creates new mineral-water interfaces during treatment, and their surface chemistry can contribute to iron-assisted PFAS adsorption.

⚗️ The Chemistry:
PFOS and PFOA carry negatively charged head groups in drinking water, and positively charged iron-hydroxide sites can attract them. pH, competing ions and the individual PFAS determine the strength of adsorption.

🔄 The Separation:
Filtration retains the loaded solids. Backwashing transfers collected material into a residual stream for appropriate management. Capture removes PFAS from the water into solids; it does not establish destruction.

✅ The value is in the interface.
Katalox-Light combines catalytic iron and manganese treatment with fine-solids retention. Iron-mineral research provides a scientific basis for evaluating its contribution within a PFAS treatment train.

📚 Research foundation:
Ferrihydrite studies show PFAS adsorption depends on surface charge, with stronger uptake under acidic, low-competition conditions. These are mineral-research findings. Katalox-Light PFAS removal requires product-specific measurements.

🔬 PFAS Science Series / 01: How iron-assisted capture works 🔬
Introducing the science behind Katalox-Light® by WATCH WATER®. Iron and manganese treatment can create the surface chemistry needed to adsorb selected PFAS, with filtration completing the separation.

⚙️ How it works:
Oxidation converts dissolved ferrous iron into fresh ferric hydroxide solids. These new mineral surfaces can adsorb selected PFAS under favourable conditions and become part of the retained filter solids. The filter bed then holds these PFAS-bearing particles, and backwashing moves the collected solids into a managed residual stream.

📊 Manufacturer specifications:

320 m²/g specified surface area
10% MnO₂ coating on ZEOSORB®
Approx. 3 µm fine-particle filtration

🎯 What controls capture?
pH and surface charge | PFAS species | Phosphate and organic matter | Contact time and flow | Available sites and solids retention

📚 Scientific foundation:
Published ferrihydrite research tested 12 PFAS and linked adsorption to surface charge, pH and phosphate competition. This explains a possible capture pathway. Katalox-Light PFAS removal and service life require product-specific inlet/outlet measurements.

⚠️ PFAS capture transfers PFAS to solids or media. This mechanism does not establish PFAS destruction.

Form the surface. Enable adsorption. Retain the solids.

💧 Turn iron into a treatment advantage. More than iron and manganese removal.
Introducing Katalox-Light® by WATCH WATER® — an engineered filtration media designed not only for iron and manganese treatment, but also to make freshly formed iron hydroxide work as part of the treatment process.

⚙️ How the concept works:
When dissolved iron is oxidized, it forms fresh ferric hydroxide and oxyhydroxide particles. These surfaces can help bind arsenic and phosphate, while Katalox-Light® retains the resulting solids within the filter bed.

🎯 One engineered medium. Multiple treatment functions:
Iron — oxidation and solids capture
Manganese — catalytic oxidation and filtration
Arsenic — iron-assisted adsorption and co-precipitation
Phosphate — capture on freshly formed iron hydroxide
Turbidity — fine-particle filtration

🔬 Why pH matters:
Suitable pH supports catalytic oxidation and removal of dissolved manganese. Katalox-Light® can also provide pH support through its alkaline components, depending on feed-water chemistry and operating conditions.

⚙️ Engineered media platform:
10% MnO₂ | Porous Zeolite Base | Developed in Germany
💧 Iron is common in groundwater. Make it work for you.

The future has a name — Katalox-Light® by WATCH WATER®.

💧 One vessel. Two functions. Smarter treatment for turbid, acidic water.💧
Introducing TurbidityTrapp-CH by WATCH WATER® — a combined treatment concept designed to support turbidity reduction and acidity correction in a single pressure vessel.

⚙️ How the system works:
Turbid water with acidic pH enters the vessel, passes through chitosan-coated reactive magnesium media, and exits as cleaner water with an improved pH profile. The system is configured for filtration and backwashing, with accumulated solids discharged to drain.

🎯 Two treatment functions in one system:
Turbidity Reduction — helps remove suspended particles and improve water clarity
Acidity Correction — reactive magnesium media supports pH increase toward the target range

🔬 System concept:
18 × 65 inch Pressure Vessel | Clack 2-inch Control Valve | Filtration + Backwash | Backwash to Drain

💧 Target outlet pH:
Designed around a target range of >7.0 up to 8.0, subject to actual feed-water chemistry, flow rate, and media condition.

✅ Designed for operation without separately dosed coagulant or NaOH*
This helps simplify treatment by combining filtration and pH correction inside one media bed.
From turbid, acidic water to cleaner, better-conditioned water — in one vessel.

💧 Understanding the surface chemistry behind Katalox-Light® performance.💧
Katalox-Light® by WATCH WATER® combines a porous manganese-oxide surface with filtration to support pH response, adsorption, oxidation, precipitation, and solids removal in water-treatment applications.

⚙️ How the surface mechanism works:
1. pH reflects H⁺ activity — lower hydrogen-ion activity corresponds to higher pH
2. Surface H⁺ uptake — negatively charged manganese-oxide surface sites can bind hydrogen ions
3. Porous gamma surface — high accessible surface area provides reactive sites for water–media interactions
4. Higher pH can support precipitation — under suitable conditions, dissolved metals can form removable hydroxide solids
5. Adsorption & oxidation complement the process — surface reactions can assist treatment of metals such as iron, manganese, copper, and lead
6. Filtration completes removal — formed solids are retained in the media bed and removed during backwashing

🔬 Why chemistry matters:
pH | Surface Charge | Alkalinity | Metal Speciation | Oxidant Availability | Contact Time | Filtration | Backwashing

🎯 Important treatment principle:
The optimum pH for contaminant removal is not always the same as the desired final-water pH. Treatment should first be optimized for the actual water chemistry, followed by any required downstream pH adjustment.

💧 More H⁺ bound at the surface. Less H⁺ activity in the water. Higher pH response.
Katalox-Light® brings together surface chemistry, precipitation, adsorption, oxidation, and physical filtration in one engineered treatment media.

💧 Manganese removal starts with understanding the surface chemistry.💧
Katalox-Light® by WATCH WATER® combines an active manganese-oxide surface with a porous filtration bed to support iron and manganese removal through adsorption, oxidation, precipitation, filtration, and backwashing.

⚙️ How the treatment pathway works:
1. Surface Chemistry & pH — manganese-oxide surfaces interact with H⁺ and OH⁻, influencing surface charge and binding behavior
2. Hydroxide Activity — increasing pH raises hydroxide-ion availability and can support precipitation and surface reactions
3. Iron Oxidation — dissolved Fe²⁺ is oxidized to Fe³⁺ and converted into filterable iron-hydroxide solids
4. Manganese Adsorption — dissolved Mn²⁺ can bind to active manganese-oxide surface sites
5. Oxidation & Precipitation — under suitable conditions, manganese is converted into insoluble forms
6. Higher pH Support — alkaline conditions can improve manganese oxidation and surface binding
7. Capture & Backwash — formed solids are retained in the bed and removed during backwashing

🔬 Why water chemistry matters:
pH | Alkalinity | Dissolved Oxygen / Oxidant | Iron & Manganese Concentration | Contact Time | Flow | Competing Substances

🎯 The Katalox-Light® treatment principle:
Condition the Water | Support Surface Reactions | Convert Dissolved Metals | Capture the Solids | Remove by Backwashing

💧 Two metals. Complementary reaction pathways. One engineered treatment media.
For reliable performance, treatment conditions should always be selected according to the actual water chemistry and operating requirements.
