Case Study - Monitoring Canal Bed Morphology and Protecting Navigation Locks Using Impact Subsea's ISS360 Sonar

As modern commercial vessels grow larger and carry deeper drafts, inland waterways and aging navigation locks face severe operational challenges.

High-velocity flows, propeller wash and bow thruster turbulence can cause severe scouring, sediment displacement and hazardous bed morphology changes that threaten critical infrastructure.

How can asset managers catch these dynamic shifts in real-time without relying on labour-intensive, visibility-limited manual diving or periodic bathymetric surveys?

Awarded best paper at the international SHM conferences, SHMII-13, a study by University of Twente researchers Mohsen Bastani and Rolands Kromanis, "2D sonar techniques for monitoring the canal bed morphology of entrances to navigation locks", utilised Impact Subsea’s ISS360 Imaging Sonar at the Prinses Beatrix Lock in the Netherlands.

Read our new case study to discover how the compact ISS360 was used to track canal bed morphology changes in real-time. Spot migrating stones and debris before they jam or damage massive lock gates and correlate ship draft interactions directly with bed disturbance intensity.

seaView 3.2 New Communications Interface

In our latest film, Managing Director, Ben Grant, demonstrates the updated Communications Panel in seaView 3.2.

Designed to give subsea engineers and survey teams complete control over device setup and data tracking.

System Ports & Smart Auto-Discovery
Instantly detect sensors, like our ISS360 Sonar, with automatic scanning of all serial and network ports.

Granular Port Search Controls
Customise baud rates and adjust response timeouts for long tether runs or complex interface setups.

RS485 Multidrop Support
Effortlessly poll and manage multiple sensors (e.g., altimeters) on a single RS485 line.

Serial over LAN
Stream subsea data seamlessly over serial or IP networks directly to your external survey software packages.

Live Monitor Tab
Built-in terminal monitoring to inspect incoming/outgoing ASCII data flows in real time.

Whether you're running sonars, profilers or NMEA GPS inputs, the updated interface ensures faster setup times and easier troubleshooting in the field.

seaView 3.2 has arrived.

If you use our sensors, you already know seaView is your go-to software for everything from initial setup and operation to logging and data output.

With this latest major update, we’ve added full support for the Unity Topside Control System and the seaMux subsea multiplexer.

Alongside that, a completely redesigned communications interface is implemented to make managing a large number of sensors, serial connections, network connections and serial-over-LAN setups a simpler process.

A few other highlights in 3.2:

• Communications Monitor: A built-in terminal app letting you track telemetry flowing in or out of any port in real time—perfect for checking data pushed to third-party systems.

• New Alarms: Visual and audio alerts for Altimeter and Depth apps to give ROV operators instant warnings on low-altitude or maximum depth thresholds.

• Wider Integration: New interfaces for ISP360 Profilers for direct connections to survey packages such as EIVA a/s Naviscan and Forum Energy Technologies Visualsoft VisualData Logger.

• Close Range Imaging: Ultra-close imaging from 10cm is now available for the ISS360 imaging sonar.
