👋 Welcome to the team, Rifat!

We are pleased to welcome AHM Rifat to Skeletal Consulting Engineers for a summer internship placement.

Rif has just completed his Civil Engineering (BEng) degree at the University of Bristol. He has a strong interest in structural engineering, with a particular focus on applying engineering principles to solve real-world challenges, and is keen to build on his academic knowledge by gaining practical industry experience and developing his technical skills.

Interestingly, this isn't the first time we've worked with Rif. Three years ago, Jack and Tom were involved in mentoring him through the University of Bristol's Industrial Mentoring Scheme, supporting a small group of first-year Civil Engineering students as they began their studies. It's great to see how far he has come since then and to now have him working alongside the team.

Welcome, Rif! It's great to have you on board!

College House, Bristol has now reached completion, delivering 57 postgraduate accommodation units for Hello Student in the heart of the city.

Retaining and adapting the existing structure brought its own challenges, requiring careful coordination of new layouts, services and structural alterations within the constraints of the original building.

The result is a scheme that extends the life of an existing asset while delivering modern, sustainable accommodation for future generations of students and achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating.

We're proud to have supported Empiric Student Property plc alongside the wider project team, including Louis de Soissons Architects, Axiom Project Services, Parrish Consultancy and Michael Brady Ltd, in bringing this transformation to life.

🌱 SCE Volunteering Day at The Ardagh

Last week, the Skeletal team spent the day volunteering at The Ardagh Community Trust in North Bristol - a fantastic local charity and community hub run for the benefit of local residents.

A key focus of the day was helping progress one of the Trust’s long-standing sustainability goals by installing guttering and IBC water storage tanks to support rainwater harvesting and reduce reliance on mains water.

Alongside this, the team got stuck into a range of practical improvement works across the site, including repairs, clearing and tidying works, and helping improve facilities used by the wider community.

It was great to support an organisation doing such valuable work locally and help tick off a good number of items from their ever-growing to-do list.

🎓🏗️ University of Bristol Site Visit at Kinbourn House

As part of our ongoing support of the University of Bristol's Industrial Mentoring Scheme, we recently took a group of first-year Civil Engineering students on a site visit to Kinbourn House (formerly 11–13 Whiteladies Road), one of our latest live projects in Bristol.

Skeletal has supported the mentoring scheme for the past four years, helping students gain insight into the civil engineering industry through mentoring, careers guidance and exposure to real-world projects.

Kinbourne House, for repeat client Urban Creation, has recently started on site and involves the conversion of an existing office building into 23 high-quality student apartments.

It was great to give students an early look at a live refurbishment project and the practical challenges that come with change-of-use developments.

This week, we are pleased to welcome Clare Sellars to Skeletal Consulting Engineers.

Clare has joined us as Business Operations & Bid Manager. She brings extensive experience in helping secure work for major global engineering consultancies. Her responsibilities will include managing bids and overseeing daily business operations, supporting new opportunities and ensuring everything runs smoothly behind the scenes.

A few of us at Skeletal have worked with Clare previously, so it’s great to be working together again. Her appointment reflects the continued growth of the business as we strengthen the team.

Welcome, Clare! It's great to have you on board!

🎭 On World Art Day, it’s great to see The Armstrong (formerly Armstrong Hall) in Thornbury now complete and back in use as a community arts venue.

The project has transformed the building, opening up the ground floor area to create a more welcoming entrance foyer, events space and bar area to support musical, drama and cultural performances.

Skeletal Consulting Engineers provided structural engineering design services for the project that involved a significant number of internal columns needing to be removed in order to create the open space, adding new transfer structures on new timber columns and glulam beams, lintels for new openings, and load assessments of the existing balcony and roof.

Delivered alongside Sanderson Weatherall and Steele Davis.

Some projects may appear straightforward at first glance, but the reality behind their delivery tells a very different story. BMT Starlight is a perfect example.

Working at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC), we supported structural checks and design development for upgrades to the Starlight Ward — the South West’s regional centre for paediatric oncology, haematology, and bone marrow / stem cell transplantation. This critical facility supports children from across the South West, Wales, Gloucestershire, Oxford, Cambridge, and Ireland.

While the visible outcome is “just” a steel deck supporting a new AHU, the true challenge lay in the logistics and location — positioned high on top of a live hospital. Delivering this required careful assessment and verification of the existing structure to ensure it could safely support the new plant, alongside navigating the constraints of a complex, operational healthcare environment.

Our involvement included:
🔹 Detailed assessment of the existing structure to justify new loading
🔹 Design of a new steel deck to support the AHU
🔹 Assessment of new flues and roof edge protection
🔹 Coordinating practical, buildable solutions in a live hospital setting

This is a project where significant engineering effort has been intentionally hidden — resulting in a solution that looks simple, but was anything but.

Three years on from completion, we’re revisiting our work on North Bristol Private Hospital, a project that converted a 1990s office building into a modern private healthcare facility.

The scheme involved a range of structural and civil interventions, including a new glazed entrance lobby, lift installation, internal structural alterations and drainage modifications to support the new clinical layout.

Skeletal Consulting Engineers provided civil and structural engineering design, working alongside Stretto Architects, QED and Koddis Construction to help deliver the project.

A great example of how existing buildings can be adapted to meet the demands of modern healthcare.

Great to see that Whites House and Bramley Cottage for Freeways is now complete and officially opened.

The development provides purpose-built accommodation supporting independent living for individuals with learning disabilities and autism, replacing outdated facilities previously on the site.

Skeletal provided civil and structural engineering design, working alongside Angus Meek Architects , Anderson Parslow Ltd and Markey Construction to deliver the scheme.

A great project to have been involved in - and a big improvement from when we first visited the site back in 2022.
