What does engineering look like in the real world?
This week, we welcomed N5 Engineering Science and Higher Engineering students from Lochaber High School to Alvance British Aluminium, giving them the opportunity to see first-hand how engineering is applied across one of Scotland's most important manufacturing operations.
During their visit, students learned about the electrolysis process used to produce aluminium and heard from our engineers about the wide range of roles involved in keeping our site running. We also discussed the social, economic and environmental impacts of our recent engineering projects and the role engineers play in solving real-world challenges.
A big thank you to our team, who took the time to share their knowledge and experiences to make the visit as interactive as possible. Their enthusiasm helped bring classroom learning to life and gave students a better understanding of what a career in engineering can involve.
It was encouraging to hear from the students about their own ambitions and interests across science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
We'd also like to thank Mr Burke from Lochaber High School for organising these visits and for the enthusiasm he brings to engineering education. He is a great advocate for his pupils, regularly creating opportunities for them to engage with local employers and helping them see the range of career paths available beyond the classroom.
Following their visit to Alvance British Aluminium, the students spent the afternoon at BSW Timber, where they gained another perspective on engineering and manufacturing in action. Seeing two very different industries in one day highlighted just how varied engineering careers can be and the important role they play across the Highlands and beyond.
If you're interested in a future in engineering, there are lots of different routes available. Our apprenticeship programme typically opens for applications each January, but we're always happy to hear from anyone who would like to find out more about the wide variety of careers at Alvance British Aluminium.
