A few photos of repairs to the whalsay ferry Hendra's starboard main engine this weekend. Our engineers attended the Hendra on friday, and she was back in service this morning. ⛴️

The MV Hendra was re-powered over two decades ago by HNP engineers who supplied and fitted the complete engine/gearbox and step up box package. The two Volvo TAMD165C's have clocked up over 70,000hrs of transporting cars, trucks and anything inbetween to Whalsay and occasionally Skerries. 📍

The crew reported low power, slow accelaration and excessive black reek from the starboard exhaust. Upon stripdown we found the stbd aftercooler was leaking, and because of it being integrated into the inlet manifold it causes salt water to enter the cylinders, which leads to valves being burnt up leading to low compression. A compression test revealed cylinders 4, 5 & 6 were low, so we removed the cylinder heads and refurbished them. We re assembled the engine, fitted a new aftercooler and let the sealant set overnight and ran up the engine today with fresh oil and filters and the ferry was back on the run at half 10.
