36 metres of stainless steel, barged to Dundee's waterfront.
Standing 36 metres long in duplex stainless steel, the Tay Whale was designed by Lee Simmons and fabricated by our team as a public art installation, before making the journey to Dundee by barge and being lifted into position on the waterfront beside the V&A Dundee. Commissioned by Dundee City Council, the sculpture stood as a landmark on the city's historic waterfront.

A bridge that curls itself into a coil.
Hydraulic cylinders concealed in its parapets allowed the Rolling Bridge in Paddington Basin to curl open in sequence, a Thomas Heatherwick design that took shape in our Littlehampton workshop. Our team built the whole 12.9-metre, eight-segment steel structure before floating it up the Grand Union Canal into position. Completed in 2004, the bridge used S355 steel throughout, with each of its eight hinged segments curling upward in sequence to form a coiled sculpture when open.

Echoing the power station's smoke flumes in steel.
Three curved forms echoing Battersea Power Station's historic smoke flumes made up the roundabout sculpture at the site, designed, fabricated and installed by our team. Working with Format Engineers, the whole project was completed in around 12 weeks, from initial design through to fabrication and installation on site.

A walk-through steel void inside the Turbine Hall.
For Miroslaw Balka's 'How It Is', we built the steel structure that filled the Turbine Hall, a sculptural metalwork installation measuring 13m high, 30m long and 10m wide, assembled from modular panels on site to form a walk-through void. The installation was completed in 2009, with structural engineering by Ramboll.

Six storeys of solar shading, engineered to keep the views.
Aluminium louvres on galvanised steel frames formed the external shading structure at Watermark Place on the north bank of the Thames, fabricated by our team and supported by oak and stainless steel connectors. The system was designed to protect the building from solar gain while preserving sightlines across the river for occupants.

Lift shaft structural steelwork for the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, part of the wider 3Ts redevelopment, was fabricated in our Littlehampton workshop before it left for installation on site.

A layered lattice, twelve metres up.
Designed by Design Engine, 'Weave' was a sculptural installation combining steel, polished stainless steel rods, glass and Douglas fir and larch timber, fabricated and installed by our team at the entrance to the University of Winchester's St Alphege Learning & Teaching Building. The piece brought together craftsmanship and material contrast to create a striking welcome to the building.

Above the bus station at Finsbury Park, steelwork for the cantilevered canopy was fabricated by our team, supported by V-shaped tapered steel columns.

The design was shortlisted for a Structural Steel Design Award in 2007.

A 60-foot steel whale now curves skyward on the Newport waterfront in Jersey City.

Mathias Gmachl's The Mother of All Echoes was fabricated by our team for its permanent home at Marina Park, marking Newport's 40th anniversary. Standing 30 feet high and weighing seven tonnes, the sculpture was engineered by Format Engineers to hold its dramatic cantilevered pose, as though lifting itself from the park. The steel was designed in 3D and hand-painted using mixed-reality holograms as a guide, with an integrated lighting system filling the structure with colour after dark. The piece forms part of 's ECHOES series exploring ecology and humanity's relationship with the natural world, commissioned by developer LeFrak.

Bringing history back to life.

Built in 1912 as the British Army's original portable airship shed, the Grade II listed Portable Airship Hangar at Farnborough was dismantled, repurposed as factory buildings, and re-erected at its current site in 2004.
Our team fabricated and installed 112 riveted lattice frames as part of the hangar's restoration, working from original-style material sourced from the USA and the Netherlands.
Each frame weighed around half a tonne, spanning 260 feet long and 70 feet high.
