When legends collaborate, the next generation wins 🧱

This is what the trade is all about. Some of the best in the game coming together, sharing their knowledge and inspiring the apprentices who will carry bricklaying forward.

The concept was inspired by Dean's legendary circle gable, which we featured on Bricklayers Online a couple of years ago. Ricky, bricklaying tutor at Burton and South Derbyshire College, brought the three musketeers of bricklaying together to pass their experience on to the apprentices.

Huge credit to Dean, Ricky, Mark Rosier, Charlie Collison, everyone else involved and the apprentices themselves. This is how we raise standards, inspire the next generation and strengthen the reputation and value of our trade.

We’re also really excited for MasterCraft 2026: The Churchill Cup, taking place 15–16 October at HG Matthews Brickworks in Buckinghamshire, where ten selected bricklayers will compete over two days.

Bricklayers Online fully supports these efforts, and we can’t wait to see both the finished circle gable and what the lads produce at the Churchill Cup. 👏🧱

🧱 Bricklayers through time

In the early 1900s, bricklaying was a very different life. Long days, basic tools, timber scaffolds and almost everything done by hand.

Through the 1930s and 40s, the trade carried on through some of the hardest years in modern history. Young bricklayers learned their craft from the generations before them, while experienced hands helped build, repair and rebuild.

Then came the post-war years. Britain desperately needed new homes, and bricklayers were at the heart of the huge building effort that followed.

The clothes changed. The sites changed. The tools improved. But the craft survived.

A small glimpse into the generations of bricklayers who came before us.

The bricklayers who built the great chimneys 🧱

After so many people asked how these enormous chimneys were built following our Fred Dibnah clips, we wanted to look at the bricklayers behind them.

These specialist gangs worked their way upwards, laying thousands upon thousands of bricks as the chimney gradually tapered. Bricks and mortar had to be hauled up as the men worked hundreds of feet above the ground, building structures that would dominate industrial skylines for generations.

A remarkable part of bricklaying history and a level of skill and nerve that's difficult to imagine today.

Fred Dibnah had a way of talking about danger that only someone who’d spent a lifetime working at height could. 🧱

“I’ve never fallen off a big chimney; you only fall off one of them once!”

No harnesses, no easy way up. Just experience, nerve and a respect for the job.

A true icon of Britain’s industrial heritage.

Only four years old and already getting stuck into the building trade! 🧱👷‍♂️

Learning from his bricklayer dad, with his hard hat on and trowel in hand. Some things really do run in the family. ❤️

How old were you when you first picked up a trowel? 👇
