Not all heroes wear capes. Sometimes, they’re the people you work alongside every day. ❤️
Today, we want to recognise one of our own, Oliver Brown, and his girlfriend, Catherine Spurr, after they helped save their friend’s life during a serious medical emergency.
What started as an ordinary day quickly became something none of them expected. Their friend suffered a severe allergic reaction after using sun cream.
Oliver noticed his skin becoming heavily blotched, which he described as looking “like a reptile”, before he began struggling to breathe.
Recognising that something was seriously wrong, Catherine administered her own EpiPen. Unfortunately, his condition continued to worsen. Within minutes, he stopped breathing and his heart stopped.
CPR was started while they waited for the emergency services to arrive. Medics then took over and he was rushed to hospital by air ambulance.
Thankfully, he survived.
Oliver and Catherine’s quick response, along with the CPR given and the work of the emergency services, played an important part in giving their friend the best possible chance.
We’re incredibly proud to have Oliver as part of our team, and we think both he and Catherine deserve recognition for what they did.
Their experience has also reminded us of something important. Anaphylaxis can happen unexpectedly, and knowing the signs and what to do can make a huge difference.
Some signs of a serious allergic reaction can include:
• Swelling of the lips, mouth, throat or tongue
• Difficulty breathing or wheezing
• A tight feeling in the throat or difficulty swallowing
• Feeling dizzy, faint or confused
• Skin becoming pale, blue or grey
• A sudden rash or changes to the skin
• Becoming unconscious or collapsing
Anaphylaxis can happen to anyone, at any time, which is why being aware of the signs and knowing how to respond is so important.
We’d like to use this story, kindly shared by Oliver and Catherine, to encourage others to learn CPR, recognise the symptoms of anaphylaxis and know what to do in an emergency.
