Drax Group UK

Drax Group UK Drax is enabling a zero carbon, lower cost energy future. It also owns and operates four gas power stations in England.

Drax's 2,600-strong employees operate across three principal areas of activity – electricity generation, electricity sales to business customers and compressed wood pellet production. Power generation:
Drax owns and operates a portfolio of flexible, low carbon and renewable electricity generation assets across Britain. The assets include the UK’s largest power station, based at Selby, North Yorksh

ire, which supplies five percent of the country’s electricity needs. Having converted two thirds of Drax Power Station to use sustainable biomass instead of coal it has become the UK’s biggest renewable power generator and the largest decarbonisation project in Europe. Its pumped storage, hydro and energy from waste assets in Scotland include Cruachan Power Station – a flexible pumped storage facility within the hollowed-out mountain Ben Cruachan. Customers:
Drax owns two B2B energy supply businesses:
Haven Power, based in Ipswich, supplies electricity and energy services to large Industrial and Commercial sector businesses. Opus Energy, based in Oxford, Northampton and Cardiff, provides electricity, energy services and gas to small and medium sized (SME) businesses. Pellet production:
Drax owns and operates three pellet mills in the US South which manufacture compressed wood pellets (biomass) produced from sustainably managed working forests. These pellet mills supply around 20% of the biomass used by Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire to generate flexible, renewable power for the UK’s homes and businesses. A partnership between Drax, Energy Sparks and schools across the UK has won the Third Sector Business Charity Award for ‘Best Response to the Cost of Living Crisis’. 🏆

Over three years, this collaboration has supported schools to reduce energy costs, cut carbon emissions and strengthen climate education for thousands of young people.

This year alone, funding has given 150 schools free access to Energy Sparks’ tools, resources and education programmes - reaching up to 50,000 children.

The impact is tangible: participating schools are on track to save over £1 million in energy bills and reduce CO2 emissions by 1,500 tonnes during the 2025/26 academic year.

⚡️ New Evidence Hub paper on the future of electricity systems.🗞️

Electricity systems are changing rapidly as renewables grow, demand rises, and new technologies reshape how power is used. Our latest paper explores what’s needed to deliver a reliable, net zero system.

Key takeaways include... ⬇️
💡 The transition is reshaping electricity systems and markets
☀️ Renewables need a portfolio of technologies to ensure reliability and flexibility
🔎 Support mechanisms must reflect the system value of different technologies
🌍 Hybrid market approaches are emerging globally.

Our conclusion: markets and carbon pricing alone aren’t enough - a mix of technologies and market frameworks is essential.

As more weather-dependent renewables come online, electricity is increasingly generated when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing.

🔋By investing in battery storage, we can store renewable energy when it’s abundant and use it later in the day to balance high demand and costs.🔋

How can the UK accelerate delivery of data centres? Our Future of Drax Power Station Director, Richard Gwilliam, recently spoke on a panel at UKREiiF about this topic.

Some key takeaways from the panel included:

💡 Access to power is now one of the biggest barriers to AI growth - and with demand evolving, we’re seeing a shift towards data centre locations that can offer secure, scalable energy.

🛠️ Adaptive reuse of existing sites and infrastructure can help unlock this at pace - creating new opportunities for regional growth.

🤝 To stay competitive, the UK must treat data centres as critical infrastructure and strengthen collaboration between government and industry to attract investment.

In a recent episode of The Purposeful Strategist, our CEO Will Gardiner discusses the changing role of electricity in modern life - and why energy is now central to economic growth, innovation and resilience. 🎙️

A key theme is flexibility and how dispatchable generation and system support help balance intermittent wind and solar, manage volatility, and maintain resilience. Will also reflects on leadership in a high-scrutiny sector: the importance of communicating clearly, building trust, and making the case for why energy underpins everything from industry to everyday life.
