🫣Friday’s Find – Exposed Copper⚡

😁Happy Friday people! Who doesn’t love a 4-day week! More importantly though, check out this weeks’ latest find!

🕵🏻This weeks’ discovery comes from Guardians’ Fixed Inspector, Kirsten Yates, who identified the following find whilst carrying out a full site inspection and test. The pictured wires were found with exposed, live copper at the terminations of the miniature circuit breaker!

⚠️Thankfully for Kirsten no harm was caused because of this, however this could have potentially resulted in an electric shock or arc flash to somebody working on the board who wasn’t aware of its presence.

📜Regulation 416.2.1 also states that; ‘Live parts shall be inside enclosures or behind barriers providing at least the degree of protection IPXXB or IP2X’.

👷🏻‍♂️Tech Tuesday – The Significance of Fixed Wiring Inspection and Testing⚠️

⚡Fixed Wire Inspection, also known as Fixed Wire Testing, is a process that inspects and tests all electrical installations on-site to ensure they are safe and compliant with regulations. This includes main panels and distribution boards but excludes any equipment connected via plugs.

🔍The inspection consists of both detailed visual checks and electrical testing of all fixed systems throughout the building. During the inspection, circuits are required to be isolated for a short period of time while testing takes place.

✅All electrical installations must meet the wiring regulations laid out by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and British Standard BS 76711. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, which cover electrical safety testing, places responsibility on the employer to protect the health and safety of employees and visitors to the workplace. This is legally enforced by the HSE (Health & Safety Executive).

🤔Why choose Guardian Electrical to carry out your Fixed Wire Inspection and Testing on-site?

☀️🔌LATEST: Plug-In Solar Panels – What do you need to know?🤔💭

🔧For those who may not be aware, Plug-in Photovoltaic solar panels – easier known as ‘balcony-solar’, are now available to buy & self-install in the UK.

🤓Although this may be able to save you a few quid on energy bills, here’s what you’ll need to know beforehand if you are thinking of purchasing one!
What better way to celebrate this weekend’s rain then with the release of the brand-new plug-in solar panels eh!

1️⃣Just because it’s a ‘plug in’, doesn’t mean no safety checks are required! Please seek advice from a competent electrician before purchasing, to ensure your house is safe to operate a panel.

2️⃣There is currently a limit of only one plug-in solar system up to 800W per household. Panel kits may be supplied with either one or two solar panels, each of which will have a certain Wattage. Provided the power emitted through the micro-inverter doesn’t exceed 800W, then your system is permitted.

3️⃣Never connect plug-in solar panels to Extension leads, cable reels, multiway adapters, travel adapters, RCD adapters, Lightning circuits or circuits supplying fixed equipment.

4️⃣You must notify your local distribution network operator when installing electricity generation, storage or connecting equipment such as Plug-in solar panels, EVSE charge points or heat pumps.

🧑🏻‍💻Further information regarding the safety of Plug-In Solar Panels, RCD’s, RCBO’s and much more can be found via the online guide here, provided by Electrical Safety First; https://lnkd.in/eUw93fzB

🌧️Rain, Rain, Disappear, the Guardian gang wants tapas and beer🥘🍻

A poem by the Guardian Marketing Team (the gift that keeps on giving).

After months of sun and glorious heat,
The rain obviously came when it was our time to meet.

The wet UK weather could never deter us,
Smiles on our faces as we packed out the buses.

Time for fun, featuring laughter and cheer,
And even fitting in, the odd cheeky beer.

Time at these events passes by so fast,
Next thing you know, your next drink is your last.

Raising a toast to those who work hard,
Reward for our service, better than any well-done card.

🔍Friday’s Find – Deadly DB🔥

👀This weeks’ find has been brought to you by Guardians very own fixed inspector, Nicky Foster & Jordan Wright who discovered this deadly DB whilst conducting a site inspection.

😱As can be seen below, this specific find was found with serious burns due to a maximum thermal reading of 280 degrees!! Thankfully for this client, Nicky & Jordan had identified this major risk before any further deadly consequences could take place.

⚠️If that wasn’t bad enough, the DB was arching & flashing upon removal of the cover and resultantly was immediately isolated. Just another example of our inspectors’ daily finds…

📜BS 7671 Regulation 521.10.202 states: “Wiring systems shall be supported such that they will not be liable to premature collapse in the event of a fire.”

🤔Feel as though your site could do with a thorough inspection? Get in touch with us today!

🔧Technical Tuesday – Panel Risk Assessment and the Compliance Gap

Panel Risk Assessments provide duty holders and authorised persons of any electrical panel with documented evidence of the condition of or enclosure, that may pose a risk to persons carrying out works. Where there is a foreseeable risk of harm, risk assessments must be undertaken by competent persons.

Panel Risk Assessments also help bridge the gap between EICR’s inspected to BS 7671 and other British safety standards, such as BS EN 60204-1, which covers the electrical equipment of machines.

Panels are often installed, modified and maintained without the relevant risk assessment, maintenance or remedial documentation being produced. This often leads to electrical incidents!

Without knowing what assets exist and their condition, a Dutyholder would struggle to demonstrate compliance in the event of an EaWR 1989 breach, with just a few of the following regulations.

📜Regulation 4 (1) – All systems shall at all times be of such construction as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, danger.

📜Regulation 4 (2) – As may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, such danger.

📜Regulation 6 – Electrical equipment which may reasonably foreseeably be exposed to mechanical damage, the effects of the weather, natural hazards, temperature or pressure, the effects of wet, dirty, dusty or corrosive conditions; or any flammable or explosive substance, including dusts, vapours or gases.

📃Program of Works

Guardian Electrical have developed a solution, which has been proven in the field with major clients, such as Tesco, Oxford Brookes University, Greencore and Diageo (parent company of Guiness, Tanqueray, Astral Tequilla and many more premium drinks).

The PRA program of work includes

➡️100% (ASFARP) Inspection and risk assessment of the panels in accordance with your request, undertaken by our fully qualified electrical engineers.

➡️QR enabled Red🔴, Amber🟠, Green🟢, labelling system, that will enable instant visibility in identifying hazards associated with the panel, and any precautions that need to be taken upon entry.

➡️PRA Paperless Reports and all associated documentation uploaded to TraQ-it.

➡️Continuous management by Guardian of panel updates/amends via TraQ-it.

⛔Remember – In the eyes of the HSE, you, the Dutyholder, are guilty until you can robustly prove otherwise.

🔎Friday's Find - Buzzing Board🐝

🤗Happy Friday everyone! It’s time to share one of our latest finds with you all, and we are buzzing with this one! 😉

📸Check out this distribution board which was discovered on site by Guardian inspector Will White! We think its best described in his own words “Yes I did have a heart attack when I took the cover off!”.

⚠️Not only did the nest pose Will with the chance of being stung, but also electrical shocks, fires, and the potential of corrosion due to contaminated components.

📜Regulation 522.4.1 within the IET BS7671:2018+A2:2022 is an example of one of the regulations that this specific finding breached, stating that “A wiring system shall be selected and erected so as to minimize the danger arising from the ingress of solid foreign bodies”
