Bridging Innovation and Heritage: A Special Session at UKZN
The University of KwaZulu-Natal hosted Theocharis Tsoutsos, Prof. Dr., Director of Renewable & Sustainable Energy Lab (ReSEL@TUC), for an inspiring session on "Innovation & Sustainable Heritage" at the historic Howard College campus. The meeting was coordinated by Dr Lawrence Babatunde Ogunsanya, Head of Discipline: Architecture, School of Engineering.
The talk explored how climate change and environmental pressures threaten cultural heritage sites worldwide, and how AI, climate-adaptive materials, and sustainable innovation principles — minimal intervention, reversibility, and adaptability — can help safeguard them for future generations.
During this opportunity, there was a wide-ranging discussion with highly valued members several faculty members about future collaboration on protecting national cultural monuments from climate change and sensitive ecosystems, and to explore funding opportunities from the EU and other international sources. Important recommendations for the future by Dr Bridget Horner, Faculty member in Architecture; Prof Claudia Loggia, Department of Housing and Nozipho Khumalo, Coordinator in the International Unit.

🌊 Bioethanol from Marine Macroalgae: A More Sustainable Fuel Option?
Congratulations to Tania Galata, Renewable & Sustainable Energy Lab (ReSEL@TUC). , whose pioneering work is being presented at the 15th Panellenic Scientific Conference of Chemical engineering (June 3–5, 2026, Chania), Tania, alongside her supervisor Theocharis Tsoutsos, Prof. Dr. and Χρήστος Νικολουδάκης, she is tackling successfully with a study on bioethanol production from marine macroalgae — a feedstock that doesn't compete with food production and needs no arable land or freshwater.
⚡ Key finding: electricity consumption is the biggest driver of environmental impact. Adding solar PV and solar thermal systems significantly cuts global warming potential and fossil fuel scarcity — but terrestrial ecotoxicity remains a challenge, largely due to the metal raw materials used in renewable energy equipment.
👉 Bottom line: the sustainability of the process depends heavily on smart energy system design.

Can We Save Our Past from a Changing Future? Managing Climate and Human Risks to Cultural Heritage

Excellent Nikitas Votzakis! Cultural heritage sites worldwide face a growing convergence of threats — from climate change to human pressure. His recent insightful Thesis identifies and prioritises the risks facing monuments and heritage sites. 20 risks were evaluated by 18 experts across heritage, academia, NGOs, industry, and government, then scored and mapped using a risk matrix. Top findings:
1️⃣ Lack of financial resources — the #1 threat
2️⃣ Wildfires
3️⃣ Lack of education/awareness
4️⃣ Inadequate decision-making
5️⃣ Landslides
6️⃣ Overtourism
Safeguarding demands a shift toward preventive, strategic planning. Nikitas exploited connections and insights gained from participating in the HI-EURECA-PRO, Heritage Innovation training activities for this research. 🙏

📍 From Strategy to Action: Shaping the Green Transition in Crete’s Mountainous Communities

For small, mountainous Mediterranean municipalities, the path to sustainability often comes with significant hurdles—limited budgets, lack of technical staff, and unique geographical challenges. Through the Logreener Project, we are proving that these barriers can be overcome by putting the right tools in the hands of local communities.

Αναχωρεί την Τρίτη για την Αθήνα και για τις Βρυξέλλες ο Δήμαρχος Ρεθύμνης προκειμένου να συμμετάσχει ως εισηγητής σε ευρωπαϊκό συνέδριο, σε πανελλήνιο Φόρουμ αλλά και σε προγραμματισμένες θεσμικές συνεργασίες με την ηγεσία υπουργείων και υπηρεσιακούς παράγοντες για κρίσιμα θέματα που αφορούν την Τοπική Αυτοδιοίκηση.
Ειδικότερα, την Τρίτη 9 Ιουνίου ο κ. Μαρινάκης θα λάβει μέρος σε σύσκεψη με τον Υπουργό Εσωτερικών κ. Θεόδωρο Λιβάνιο, τον Υφυπουργό Εθνικής Οικονομίας και Οικονομικών/ αρμόδιο για τη Δημοσιονομική Πολιτική κ. Θάνο Πετραλιά, τον Πρόεδρο της Ελληνικής Στατιστικής Αρχής (ΕΛΣΤΑΤ) Καθηγητή Αθανάσιο Κατσή και τον Περιφερειάρχη Δυτικής Μακεδονίας κ. Γιώργο Αμανατίδη για το μεγάλο θέμα που έχει προκύψει και αφορά το μέλλον των Αναπτυξιακών Οργανισμών που εξυπηρετούν την Τοπική Αυτοδιοίκηση.
Την επόμενη μέρα, ο Δήμαρχος θα μεταβεί στις Βρυξέλλες, προκειμένου να παρακολουθήσει τις εργασίες του συνεδρίου πολιτικής της Ευρωπαϊκής Εβδομάδας Βιώσιμης Ενέργειας 2026 (EUSEW), το οποίο διεξάγεται στη βελγική πρωτεύουσα κατά το χρονικό διάστημα 9 έως 11 Ιουνίου 2026, ελκύοντας το ενδιαφέρον φορέων χάραξης πολιτικής, ειδικών και εκπροσώπων της αγοράς από όλη την Ευρώπη.
Με την ιδιότητα του Προέδρου της ΠΕΔ Κρήτης , ο κ. Μαρινάκης θα συμμετάσχει την Πέμπτη 11 Ιουνίου, ως ομιλητής σε πάνελ με τίτλο: «Ανασχεδιάζοντας τις Μεσογειακές Πόλεις Μαζί: Συμμετοχή των Πολιτών και Καινοτόμα Χρηματοδοτικά Εργαλεία για την Κλιματική Ουδετερότητα».
Η συνεδρία στην οποία εντάσσεται η ομιλία του Δημάρχου Ρεθύμνης και Προέδρου ΠΕΔ Κρήτης εστιάζει στις προκλήσεις των τοπικών αρχών για την κλιματική αλλαγή και την ενεργειακή μετάβαση.

Ο κ. Μαρινάκης θα επικεντρωθεί στην τοποθέτηση του στην υλοποίηση των τοπικών ενεργειακών επενδύσεων με έμφαση στη χρηματοδότηση της ενεργειακής μετάβασης, τα δημοσιονομικά μέσα, τις δυνατότητες των Δήμων για αστική αναγέννηση, τα κοινωνικοοικονομικά οφέλη από ενεργειακά και κλιματικά έργα και στο πως η ενεργή συμμετοχή πολιτών και κοινοτήτων μπορούν να ενεργοποιήσουν βιώσιμες επενδύσεις στον τομέα της ενέργειας σε τοπικό επίπεδο.

Αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι η Ευρωπαϊκή Εβδομάδα Βιώσιμης Ενέργειας (EUSEW), διοργανώνεται από τον Ευρωπαϊκό Εκτελεστικό Οργανισμό για το Κλίμα, τις Υποδομές και το Περιβάλλον (CINEA) και αποτελεί το σημαντικότερο ετήσιο συνέδριο πολιτικής της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής για την καθαρή ενέργεια και την ενεργειακή αποδοτικότητα.
Η συμμετοχή του Δημάρχου Ρεθύμνης στις εργασίες του Συνεδρίου πραγματοποιείται στο πλαίσιο της συνεργασίας του Δήμου με το Εργαστήριο Ανανεώσιμων και Βιώσιμων Ενεργειακών Συστημάτων της Σχολής Μηχανικών Περιβάλλοντος του Πολυτεχνείου Κρήτης, το οποίο συμμετέχει στην οργανωτική επιτροπή της εν λόγω θεματικής συνεδρίας.

Κατά την επιστροφή του στην Ελλάδα, την Παρασκευή 12 Ιουνίου 2026, ο Δήμαρχος θα συμμετάσχει με την ιδιότητα του Προέδρου της ΕΔΕΥΑ στο Φόρουμ Διαχείρισης Υδατικών Πόρων που διοργανώνει ο Πανελλήνιος Σύνδεσμος Επιχειρήσεων Προστασίας Περιβάλλοντος, στο Ίδρυμα Γουλανδρή στην Αθήνα.
Παρουσία του Υπουργού Περιβάλλοντος & Ενέργειας, ο κ. Μαρινάκης θα κάνει εισήγηση στη συνεδρία με θεματική «Υδατικοί Πόροι και Κλιματική Κρίση: Στρατηγικές Προσαρμογής και Πολιτικές Προτεραιότητας».

Ο Δήμαρχος θα επιστρέψει στο Ρέθυμνο το βράδυ της ίδιας ημέρας και κατά τη διάρκεια της απουσίας του θα τον αναπληρώνει στα καθήκοντά του ο Αντιδήμαρχος κ. Γιώργος Σκορδίλης.
