You spend enough time on one project and the people become as memorable as the job itself.

Josh has been one of those people for us.

He’s spent a big part of his time with Ascon working on City Rail Link, seeing the project through different stages and being part of the crew as the work around him changed.

Now, as CRL moves through its finishing stages, Josh is wrapping up his time with Ascon too.

Thanks for the mahi, Josh. Thanks for getting stuck in, being part of the crew and sharing plenty of laughs along the way. 🤙

If you’ve worked alongside Josh, drop him a message below and help us send him off.

What makes someone valuable on a piling crew?

There’s plenty happening around a piling operation, and the crew on the ground need to stay switched on.

Working safely around the rig and heavy plant, understanding the sequence, picking up hand signals and communicating clearly when things get noisy.

Our general labourers working across piling are getting stuck into the mahi, building their skills and gaining more experience on the ground.

Good to see our people continuing to add to what they can do. 👷🏽‍♂️💪

Who else has spent some time working around piling?

Anyone else ready to see the back of the 6am start in the dark?

Spring’s landed, bringing a bit more daylight to the working day and a change of season across our sites.

For some of our crew, it also comes as the finishing stages of City Rail Link start wrapping up and people take the skills and experience they’ve built there into their next mahi.

Five years on CRL has been a big chapter for our people, and we’re looking forward to seeing where that experience takes them next.

And after a winter of dark starts, wet gear and muddy boots, we’ll happily take a few more hours of daylight. ☀️👷🏽‍♂️

What are you looking forward to this spring?

Anyone can send people to site.
The real question is...
Are they ready when they arrive?

The best workers don't need constant supervision.

They communicate well.
They understand the standards.
They contribute from day one.

That's the difference experience makes.

When people think about construction, they picture excavators, cranes and concrete.

The last few weeks of a project usually look very different.

Cleaning.
Sorting.
Moving materials.
Packing containers.
Tidying work areas.

It might not be the most exciting part of the job, but it's one of the most important.

A clean site is a safer site, and finishing well is just as important as starting well.

There's plenty of work coming.
The question is...
Who's going to build it?

Across New Zealand, major infrastructure projects are lining up for the years ahead. But projects don't move because a budget was approved.
They move because experienced people turn up every day and get the job done.

Growing our industry isn't all about creating more work. It's making sure we have enough skilled people ready when those projects begin.

Pretty cool to look back and see how far someone has come. 👊

Andrick joined the City Rail Link team two and a half years ago as a Site Lift Operator. Since then, we’ve watched him move into civil works, learn new skills, take on more responsibility and build some great relationships across the project.

Today his time on CRL comes to an end — but he’s not going far.

Tomorrow it’s onto another ASCON project, this time joining a piling team. New site, different mahi and plenty more to learn.

He heads into this next chapter with two and a half years of solid experience behind him and the trust he’s earned along the way.

Awesome mahi Andrick. It’s been great watching the growth mate — now take that Mahi with Mana into the next one. 💪

Every person on site leaves something behind.

There’s the obvious stuff — the concrete poured, the pipe laid, the ground moved.

But when you’ve been around construction long enough, you know that’s only part of the job.
You remember the people.

The mate who gave you a hand when they didn’t have to. The operator who made your job easier. The supervisor who took the time to show you something. The crew that could have a good laugh but still knew when it was time to get stuck in.

Projects finish. Teams move on. Everyone ends up on the next job somewhere.

But the people you work alongside are a big part of what makes a good job a good job.

The work matters. But the people make the job.

And those are the ones you remember. 👷🏽‍♂️🤝

👷 Good judgement is one of the best things you can bring to site.

This month’s Ascon Toolbox is reinforcing something simple with our crews: if something doesn’t look right, stop, ask and speak up.

We’re talking confined-space awareness, working within your training and authorisations, and having the confidence to stop rather than improvise when a job isn’t going to plan.

Because we want our people bringing more than their skills to site.

Think. Ask. Speak up. Look out for your mates. Do the job properly.

That’s a pretty useful tool to have in the toolbox. 🔧

What do you reckon matters more on site — knowing the answer, or knowing when to ask the question?
