🎉 The number you've been waiting for: 3️⃣2️⃣5️⃣

Together with our Treaty Partner Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and National Partner Meridian Energy, we're excited to announce the new official kākāpō population.

Ninety chicks from the 2026 breeding season have been officially added to the population after the youngest surviving chick reached 150 days old, the milestone at which young kākāpō join the official tally.

With the last breeding season taking place in 2022, this marks the first increase in the population in four years and brings the total to a recovery-era high of 325 kākāpō.

Kākāpō Recovery is a team effort, and we're incredibly grateful to everyone who contributes their time, expertise and support to helping secure the future of this taonga manu - ngā mihi nui.

📢Warning for water users at Aviemore

On Monday 7 September and Thursday 11 September, we’ll be testing the sluice gates at Aviemore Power Station.

The tests require us to fully open each gate separately, so there will be a lot of water spilling during those times. The main test will take up to one hour to complete.

Do not enter the water below the Aviemore Power Station under any circumstances on these days. Remember to obey all warning signs as currents and river flows will be unpredictable.

“I am a greeny but you have got to be into change as well. There has got to be a balance.”

Kate Gullery has an amazing and very important job. As part of Meridian’s Renewable Construction team, she’s helping deliver the new renewable energy that New Zealand needs. And as an Environmental and Sustainability Specialist on that team, she makes sure that work is delivered with as little impact to the surrounding environment as possible.

Women of Meridian is a series profiling some of the amazing women across our company, especially those in roles traditionally held by men. It’s about raising visibility and showing the range of opportunities that exist here and across our industry. As the saying goes: if you can see it, you can be it.

What can you get for a dollar these days? A chocolate bar? Some lollies? The Twizel Rugby Club got a building.

Sure, it was a run down. And yes, it needs lots of work. But their plan is to redevelop this derelict old building into shiny new sports hub - not just for the rugby club, but for the entire community.

Meridian is incredibly proud to support this project through our Power Up fund. We can't wait to see it progress - we love the Twizel community, and we love what this will mean for community sport and everyone who is involved in it.

Shameless Te Āpiti Wind Farm appreciation post 💙

Located north of the Manawatū Gorge, Te Āpiti was the very first wind farm Meridian built in New Zealand and the first wind farm to supply electricity into the national grid. It's been harnessing the region's legendary winds since 2004.

The wind farm's 55 turbines can generate up to 90.75 megawatts of electricity, enough to power around 30,000 average New Zealand homes.

The winds here are exceptional, even by international standards. Thanks to the Manawatū Gorge acting like a giant funnel, Te Āpiti gets the strong, consistent winds that make wind energy possible.

Te Ahu a Turanga Manawatū Tararua highway goes through Te Āpiti, giving travellers an up-close look at the turbines!

Add rolling hills, giant turbines and one of New Zealand's most unique landscapes, and yeah... we're pretty proud of this one. 💨💙
