I look after the models at Energy Link. We are always improving our modelling and analysis and ensuring we keep up to date with all the factors that drive the Electricity Market. Our models need to be flexible, fast and easy to use.

I have a degree in Mathematics and Physics. All my jobs have involved the application of mathematics to industry in New Zealand. I was happy to join the Energy Link team to upgrade the forecasting model in 1997 in a contract that was supposed to last a year. In the ensuing years I have found many more exciting challenges dealing with the ever changing world of the Electricity Market

Mathematical and logical problems are a passion of mine. I love finding ways to determine best practice in the market and to understand the behaviour of the market as a whole and in all its parts. I also relish the challenge of finding better ways to process and handle data.

💡 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸?
Being a father and grandfather; the younger family members keep me busy. I am also a musician and I’m often playing in local venues or helping run the Dunedin Musicians’ Club. When I can, I like to get out to our wonderful back country for a walk, a climb, or some skiing.

Recently we saw headlines in national news discussing applications by both Meridian Energy and Contact Energy seeking to extend the operating ranges of Lakes Pūkaki and Hāwea, respectively, by allowing them to be run down lower as-of-right, accessing so-called “contingent storage”.

With some recent changes at Energy Link Ltd, we thought it was a good time to introduce a few of our team members. 🤝

Next up is Tom Murphy, who is one of our 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀!

💡 𝗖𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝘀 𝗮 𝗯𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸?
My role is to provide our clients with insights into the future performance of their existing and planned assets. This can include questions about spot prices, revenue, dispatch and curtailment, security of supply, and grid analysis. I use our in-house software (EMarket and EMarketOffer) to build and refine forecasts that are used to inform the decisions of our clients.

💡 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸?
I have a degree in applied mathematics and have previously held analytic roles prior to working at Energy Link. I have always had an interest in models and simulations, so when I saw this job advertised, I knew that it would be something I would love.

No two weeks are the same. I consistently find myself working on the bleeding edge problems that the New Zealand energy market has. I love creating new models to match the real world and to project into the future. There are also huge opportunities for learning, which is fantastic.

I am a big cricket fan, probably something to do with being a stats nerd. I also enjoy all types of music and love food and cooking - particularly Asian food.

Recently, Paul Chapman spoke at the 𝗡𝗭 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺 - covering recent trends in electricity contract pricing and what they might signal about the market ahead.

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀:

💡The July 2025 Energy Link Electricity Contract Price Index fell by 4.8% from June on a continuing trend of light trading.

💡The FPVV component of the index fell over the month while the CFD component rose taking the FPVV Index below the CFD index.

💡The FPVV index has been lower than the CFD index 27 out of the last 60 months (45%) compared with 33% in the previous 60 months and 16% before August 2015.

💡This trend reflects growing uncertainty over future wholesale prices that began in 2018 with the first Pohokura pipeline outage and amplified by falling gas reserves and the pace at which the economy will be decarbonised.

💡CFDs are typically negotiated over shorter time periods than FPVV contracts making the CFD index more reactive to current conditions and masking a relatively stable FPVV premium (6.5% to 7%) on a 12-month rolling average basis (excluding the period of high market volatility between mid-2018 to mid-2022).

💡Nonetheless, wholesale prices have climbed steadily and volatility in ASX quarterly futures prices has increased since mid-2018.

💡The correlation between the prices of ASX futures contracts and wholesale electricity prices against which they finally settle has weakened.

💡Purchasers have been polarised with the risk averse seeking shorter term FPVV contracts, while a few saw the backwardated futures market and made what, since 2018 at least, has so far been a good decision to go long.
