It's been a big year of growth for SBA Civil, with new people, new projects and an expanding range of civil infrastructure capability.

While we're proudly based in the Wellington / Lower North Island, we're increasingly delivering projects right across New Zealand - from water infrastructure and earthworks to roading, rail, environmental works, structures and major infrastructure projects.

**It's been a big year for SBA Civil - and our latest GroundWork newsletter highlighted just how much has been happening. Here's a look at some of the projects, people and progress behind that growth.**

SBA Civil has welcomed **eight new field staff and three new management team members** in recent months, adding further experience and capacity as our project workload continues to grow.

The expansion follows a significant increase in enquiries and negotiated work secured off the back of successful project delivery, with the team increasingly being called upon to tackle complex civil infrastructure projects across the Wellington region.

Alongside our growing team, we've also invested in new plant, vehicles and equipment and are proud to have recently been recognised as an **approved contractor for Wellington Water**.

🚜 **Racing the tides. Growing the team. Locking progress into place.**

It's been a big year so far at SBA Civil, with new projects, new people, new plant and plenty happening across the region.

The latest edition of **GroundWork** features:

▪ Coastal protection at Raumati Beach
▪ Our award-winning Paekākāriki slip repair
▪ A new face in the SBA Civil team
▪ Insights into subdivision and land development
▪ A look back at a big 18 months of projects and progress

We've also welcomed **11 new team members**, become an **approved contractor for Wellington Water**, and continued investing in the capability needed for what's shaping up to be a busy 2026/27.

Big gear. Bigger capability. 💥

Meet the newest addition to the SBA Civil fleet — our new 25T Hitachi 225 excavator, equipped with advanced 3D GPS machine control for precision earthworks and model-based construction.

The machine is already hard at work on the Plimmerton Farms Reservoir & Wastewater Treatment Plant project, where SBA Civil has been engaged by Fulton Hogan to deliver all civil works and earthworks.

This new investment significantly increases SBA Civil’s capability, efficiency, and precision onsite — helping us deliver complex projects smarter, safer, and faster.

We're proud to be delivering another innovative coastal protection project on the Kapiti Coast using the ECO Reef / HexLoc https://hexloc.co.nz/ retaining system at Raumati Beach.

This is a technically challenging project involving tidal working windows, groundwater management, liquefiable sands, weather constraints, and complex logistical coordination - all while operating safely within a live public beachfront environment.

The new interlocking retaining wall system will replace failed timber and rip-rap protection with a durable long-term solution designed to last 50+ years.

Great to see the project featured by Kapiti News and to help showcase the smart engineering and collaboration behind these coastal resilience solutions.

SBA Civil also successfully delivered another ECO Reef retaining wall project nearby last year for Porirua City Council:

From the rugged hills of the Paekākāriki Hill Road to high-traffic stretches of State Highway 1, it's been a busy 12months for SBA Civil, delivering infrastructure and commercial solutions across the Wellington region.

The Year’s Key Milestones:

Critical Infrastructure: Installed 4,500m of subsoil drainage on SH1 for Ventia/NZTA under intense 7-day shifts.

Public Assets: Progressing bulk earthworks and deep services for the GWRC Electric Bus Depot in Miramar.

Precision Engineering: Delivered a full civil package in Porirua featuring 5,000m³ of earthworks.

Award-Winning Resilience: Recognized for our innovation on the Paekākāriki Hill Road slip repair for Porirua City Council.

Growing Together: We’ve expanded our fleet and our team of "legends," continuing to invest back into the people who make these projects possible.

The year's been off to a flying start at SBA Civil and we're thrilled to share the first edition of 'Groundwork' for 2026, offering a snapshot of the action across our sites in the Greater Wellington Region.

Newsletter Highlights:

GWRC Electric Bus Depot (Miramar): We are currently delivering a comprehensive package - including bulk earthworks, deep services, and pavement construction - within a constrained, high-activity environment.

Precision Commercial Delivery (Porirua): We recently completed a full civil package for a private developer, featuring 5,000m³ of earthworks and high-tolerance platform preparation.

State Highway 1 Drainage: Our team worked 7-day weeks and long shifts to efficiently install 4,500m of subsoil drainage for Ventia/NZTA.

🏆 WE HAVE A CHAMPION! 🏆
Huge congratulations to our Managing Director, Sam Aitkenhead, on winning the 2026 NZ Open Pro-Am at Millbrook Queenstown!
Alongside partner Haydn Barron, Sam finished an incredible -39 under par, securing the title with a clinical final round performance.
A massive shout-out to the legendary support crew who travelled from Kāpiti, Auckland, and the Wairarapa. True community backing for a Paekākāriki-based business on the national stage!
