What’s hiding behind your walls? 🏡

This is timber sarking, a construction method commonly used in older New Zealand villas and character homes before plasterboard became the norm.

Back then, horizontal timber boards were fixed to the wall framing to strengthen the building and provide a backing for plaster finishes. In many homes, these boards have remained hidden for over 100 years.

Interestingly, what was once concealed is now making a comeback. Modern homes often use exposed timber wall linings inspired by traditional sarking to add warmth, texture and character.

Every renovation uncovers a piece of history, reminding us that good craftsmanship never goes out of style.

Opening up this wall has completely transformed the feel of this home👌🏽

By replacing a solid wall with a large ranch slider, we’ve created a seamless connection between the indoor living area and the future outdoor entertaining space. The difference is immediate, more natural light, and a much greater sense of openness throughout the room.

Once the outdoor area is completed, the ranch slider will extend the living space beyond the walls of the home, creating the perfect flow for entertaining, and family living.
