Time to put consensus to the test.

With campaigns launched and hoardings up around the country, the election period is properly underway. We'll be keeping a close eye on the campaign trail to see whether the consensus shown at the Big Infrastructure Debate can survive the rigours of electioneering.

The temptation of short-term political wins at the ballot box by making unrealistic infrastructure promises diverts attention and resources away from vital maintenance and upgrades to existing assets, and can cause major delays or cancellations to existing projects. This can ultimately lead to critical infrastructure failures with devastating effect for the New Zealand public.

One way or the other, we have heard every major political party substantially agree that we must work together to try take the politics out of infrastructure.

The National Infrastructure Plan has given us the blueprint. Politicians have already shown the willingness and consensus to deliver it. Now is the time to turn words into action and remove the politics from infrastructure.
