Choose the Right Standard for Maximum Machine Performance

Have you ever experienced these problems?

❌ Same belt number, but the belt is too tight after installation
❌ Installed a new belt, but the tension cannot be adjusted properly
❌ Same belt number, but the actual belt length is different

The problem may not be the wrong belt size. It may be caused by different belt length measurement standards.

Gates VulcoPower II is available in 2 standards:

🔴 Red Label – Manufactured to JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard)

🟡 Yellow Label – Manufactured to RMA / ARPM (American Standard)

Although both are VulcoPower II belts with the same high quality and performance, they use different belt sizing and length measurement systems. Therefore, an A50 (JIS) belt is not the same length as an A50 (RMA) belt and they cannot be used interchangeably, even though they have the same belt number.

VulcoPower II is suitable for a wide range of industrial applications, including:

A50 is not always A50!

Have you ever experienced this?

▪ A belt with the same part number, but it becomes too tight after installation
▪ After replacing the belt, proper tension adjustment is not possible
▪ The belt number matches, but the actual length is different

Why does this happen?
Because V-belts can be manufactured according to different standards. Even when the codes or designations appear similar, the actual belt dimensions may differ.

Main V-Belt Standards

🇺🇸 RMA / ARPM (American Standard)
Widely used in the United States and by many manufacturers worldwide. Belt length is typically referenced by Inside Length (Li).

🇪🇺 DIN / ISO (European Standard)
Commonly used in Europe and many industrial applications worldwide. Belt length is referenced by Pitch Length (Lp/Lw), which represents the belt’s load-carrying line.

🇯🇵 JIS (Japanese Standard)
Widely found in machinery and equipment from Japan. Although it also uses Pitch Length similar to DIN/ISO, it has different specifications for belt sections, product designations, and tolerance requirements.

What are Li, Lp and La?

Li, Lp and La are not standards. They are different reference positions used to measure belt length.

Li = Inside Length
Lp (Lw) = Pitch Length
La (Lo) = Outside Length

Generally:

Li < Lp < La

Therefore, even if the numbers on the belt look similar, the actual belt length may differ. This can affect installation, tension adjustment, and the service life of the power transmission system.

TECH TIP FROM GATES

Before selecting or replacing a V-belt, don’t look only at the belt number. Always verify:

✅ Belt standard (RMA/ARPM, DIN/ISO, or JIS)
✅ Belt section
✅ Length measurement reference
