At Blackstone Construction, we believe every historic building has a story worth showcasing. Our latest project, the William, is a perfect example of that philosophy in action—transforming a dilapidated 1905 structure into a vibrant anchor for the community.
This wasn’t just a renovation; it was a complex puzzle that required our team to honor the building’s century-old "bones" while integrating high-end modern functionality. Today, the William houses 27 modern apartment units, leasable commercial space, and the latest location for Carrigan’s pub, all topped off by a stunning rooftop penthouse.
What truly defines this project are the details you can’t see from the street:
The Engineering: Our team cut a massive four-floor opening through the heart of the building to install a skylight 70 feet above the main atrium, flooding the historic core with natural light.
The Craftsmanship: We found beauty in the building’s original materials, reclaiming heart pine floors for several units and meticulously repurposing original structural joists into custom trim work throughout the interior.
The Heritage: To meet the National Parks Service historical tax credit standards, we carefully restored the original cornices, fire escapes, and exterior trim, ensuring the building’s 1905 character remains for another century.
From the technical challenge of the four-story atrium cut to the precision of the exterior restoration, the William showcases our commitment to Birmingham’s architectural legacy. We’re proud to play a part in revitalizing our city’s landscape, one historic brick at a time.
