💻 Sometimes a small change in the design can make a big difference during assembly.

In this ScotCyd software chat, ScotCyd is working through a two-story steel frame design and demonstrating the benefit of alternate stud spacing.

When multiple framing members, connections, and service holes need to come together in the same location, things can get crowded quickly. Adjusting the spacing can help avoid those conflicts and make it easier to secure the framing members together during assembly.

It's a good example of why steel framing design isn't just about making everything fit on the screen—it's about thinking ahead to how those components will actually be assembled in the real world.

Lateral force resisting systems are a key part of designing in high-seismic regions. Options include shear walls with different sheathing materials, strap-braced shear walls, and moment frames.

Amongst all options, those that stand out are steel-sheathed shear walls and strap-braced shear walls, proven to perform better compared to other systems under seismic loads. In this article, we explore lateral force resisting systems, their differences, and their performance under seismic loads. At Scottsdale, we provide roll forming solutions tailored for building in high-seismic regions. Our Scotpanel roll forming machines are ideal for low- to mid-rise residential and commercial projects, while the KFS Framemaker roll forming machines are designed for larger commercial, institutional, and industrial buildings. Both machine families support the fabrication of reliable lateral force resisting systems, helping engineers and builders deliver safer, code-compliant structures in seismic regions.

💻 Designing the frame is only part of the job. What about everything that needs to run through it?

In this episode, ScotCyd demonstrates how Scottsdale's design and engineering software makes it easy to add service holes across multiple steel frames at once.

Select the frames, add the services, and then fine-tune the location of the openings based on the needs of the project. Those details can then become part of the production data used to manufacture the framing components.

It's another example of how planning in the software can simplify work later in production and on the jobsite.

ScotSteel has a LOT under the hood. 👀 What feature should ScotCyd explore next? Drop your software questions or requests in the comments.

Steel coil decisions can affect everything from engineering and purchasing to fabrication and inventory planning.

The ScotCalc CFS Coil Analyzer helps framing fabricators turn Mill Test Report (MTR) data into useful insights before material ever enters the production line.

Using material properties such as yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, thickness, coating, and chemistry, our free online ScotCalc Coil Analyzer tool provides a preliminary evaluation that can help users:

• Understand applicable AISI S100-16 acceptance criteria • Identify ASTM specifications • Screen material for ductility and weldability • Effectively manage existing coil inventory • Support project scoping and value engineering • Make more informed material decisions for roll forming machines

Whether evaluating new steel coils or making better use of existing coil inventory, the ScotCalc Coil Analyzer adds another layer of information to your steel framing production planning. 🏗️ The framing component is roll formed. Now what?

In this episode, ScotCyd takes viewers to the outfeed table of a Scottsdale mobile factory to show what happens as each finished component comes off the machine.

Components can be identified by an optional printer—or, as ScotCyd demonstrates, the old-fashioned Sharpie method works too. From there, the framing can take two different paths: flat packed and wrapped for shipment and panelized at the jobsite, or assembled into transportable wall panels before leaving the factory.

It's a simple part of the process, but good organization at the outfeed helps keep hundreds—or thousands—of individual components moving from production to assembly in the right order.

Roll it. Identify it. Organize it. Build it.
