Last week, NEDS had the privilege of welcoming Erland Construction, Inc. and the Erland Foundation to NEDS Headquarters in Waltham, MA, as they presented a generous contribution raised through their Employee Co****le Tournament earlier this summer.

These funds will help support NEDS' community outreach efforts focused on the importance of organ donation, while also providing vital grief support resources for donor families. We are deeply grateful to the Erland team for turning fun, friendly competition into meaningful impact for the communities we serve.

The Story of Bob McDonald
Erland’s second President and a Shareholder

Robert “Bob” McDonald served as President of Erland Construction from 1983 to 1999, leading the company through a period of significant growth and evolution. A U.S. Air Force veteran, Bob brought discipline, integrity, and a people-first approach to leadership, qualities that left a lasting impact on Erland and the broader construction community.

Bob’s path was defined early on by determination and opportunity. In 1949, he was one of just 13 individuals to receive a scholarship from the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund. He went on to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he became captain of the golf team and, more importantly, the first in his family to attend college. That experience shaped not only his career but also his lifelong commitment to mentorship and giving back.

Throughout his career, Bob was known as a mentor and friend to many, investing in the development of those around him and helping shape the next generation of industry leaders. His dedication to the Ouimet Fund spanned decades, serving as both a board member and trustee, reinforcing his belief in creating opportunities for others.

Bob’s leadership helped define Erland’s culture—grounded in hard work, accountability, and respect for people. His legacy continues to be felt across the company today, carried forward by those he mentored and the values he instilled.

“One piece of advice from Bob that’s always stayed with me—out of many, just like with Ken—came from a round at Charles River Country Club. On the 15th hole, Bob would say: no matter how good your drive is, lay up your second shot short of the water—don’t go for the green in two. It was a simple piece of golf advice, but it perfectly reflected how Bob approached business and leadership. He believed in being strategic, disciplined, and playing the long game. It wasn’t about taking unnecessary risks for a quick win. It was about making smart, calculated decisions that set you up for success over time. That mindset has stayed with me throughout my career and continues to influence how I approach both projects and leadership today. “ – Tom Blesso / Senior Vice President

“A piece of advice from Bob that has always stayed with me is simple: don’t shoot from the hip. If you’re not sure of the answer when asked a question, say so, and commit to finding the right answer and following up. That approach speaks to Bob’s emphasis on honesty, preparation, and accountability. He believed it was far better to pause, verify, and respond thoughtfully than to give a quick answer that could lead to mistakes. It reinforced the importance of credibility and trust, both internally and with clients, and is something I still carry with me in how I communicate and make decisions today.” – Chuck Vaciliou / Senior Vice President

On August 6, Erland welcomed 15 educators and academic leaders as part of the AGC MA Building Advancement Externship (BAE) program, connecting educators with career pathways in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry.

We were also joined by Associated Builders & Contractors Massachusetts and trade partners Optiline Enterprises, Steven Winter Associates, and Turner Brothers LLC, who shared their expertise, career journeys, commitment to sustainability, and training programs.

We’re proud to support the BAE program for the fifth year and help inspire the next generation of industry professionals.

Campus planning is about more than deciding what to build next—it’s about creating a thoughtful roadmap for the future.

In his latest article featured in High-Profile, Scott Bates, Vice President, Strategy & Development at Erland Construction, explores how master planning can help schools align their facilities with their mission, educational priorities, enrollment goals, and long-term vision.

At Erland, we believe bringing construction expertise into the conversation early helps turn ambitious campus visions into realistic, achievable plans.

The need for senior living continues to grow, but bringing new communities to market is becoming increasingly complex.

Owners and operators are navigating limited land availability, rising development costs, permitting challenges, staffing pressures, evolving resident expectations, and aging facilities, all while working to create communities positioned for long-term operational success.

The challenge is finding the right balance.

Early collaboration between owners, operators, designers, and builders can help teams evaluate opportunities, identify risks, navigate complexity, and make informed decisions before significant resources are committed.

We're exploring five challenges shaping senior living design and construction today, and the opportunities they present for moving the right projects forward.
